Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upload image w/error checking

    I know there are a few posts regarding uploading images but didn't see a detailed answer including some error checking. I thought I would present this which works for me. There may be better, more efficient methods. Suggestions welcome.

    dim msg as c = ""
    if eval_valid("cmd")
    dim fn as C

    If right(filetoupload.filename,3) = "jpg" .or. right(filetoupload.filename,3)= "bmp" .or. right(filetoupload.filename,3)= "peg" .or. right(filetoupload.filename,3) = "gif"

    dim bb as b
    bb=FileToUpload.data
    If bb.size() < 50000 ' checks size limit of image

    If filetoupload.filename <> "" ' checks if user hit upload image button before browsing for image
    ' Saves image to session folder first then enters image into logos table. When session is over, image in session folder is deleted
    file.from_blob(session.session_folder + "\\" + FileToUpload.filename, FileToUpload.data)

    tbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Logos.dbf")
    tbl.enter_begin()
    tbl.Date = Date()
    tbl.userid = session.__protected__userid
    tbl.Image = FileToUpload.data
    tbl.Name = FileToUpload.filename
    tbl.enter_end(.t.)
    tbl.close()
    else
    response.redirect("EMLogowarn.a5w")' filetoupload.filename <> ""
    end if

    else
    response.redirect("EMLogowarn.a5w") ' filetoupload.data size
    end if

    else
    response.redirect("EMLogowarn.a5w") ' not correct format

    end if
    end if

    Hi Eric,

    After looking through your script this obviously is for the web. I do this sort of thing so as to be able to search at a later time for "web" in a forum to have, as in this case, an example of a web related script.

    I also noticed in your image types you tested for you had "peg"....did you mean maybe "png" ??

        :D

        Of course!!! :) ya got me there!! But you should also be checking for png then right....Alpha does accept this format as well.

        And forgot to thank you in advance of my needing such example script--having people contribute like this sure makes it so much easier to learn.

          Thank you for the suggestion Mike.
          I will include png as one of the accepted formats.
          Any suggestions on file size limit? (bb.size() < 50000)
          This script is for company logos.

            Re: Upload image w/error checking

            Hi Eric,
            I just checked a few .jpeg images and a lot depends on how it was compressed. I have some that are say 800x600 px that would fall under your 50000 limit but then have others say about 300x400 px that will be over it. I think your limit should be raised . In fact, I have a logo from one customer I simply took directly from his website and it was over 148000. This happened to be a bmp which is going to most likely be the largest of any you would be using.

              Re: Upload image w/error checking

              You could always use file.filename_parse(FileToUpload.filename,"e") - this gets the file extension no matter how many letters...

              I did adapt an AJAX file upload if you're interested, I do believe Alpha are working on rewriting it for the next update to the WAS samples but I am working on a simplified version too...
