Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      G.,
      I would appreciate a copy, also if you'd be willing to send it.

        Bumping this back to the top.
        The attached is a short movie that was submitted to this forum about a year ago by G.Gabriel, showing a technique of using the "+" and "-" keys to adjust numeric, date or character fields up or down. I am primarily interested in adjusting date field. I really would like to have access to this code behind the technique if at all possible, hint, hint......(G.Gabriel)
        Thanks.
        Ernie

        P.S. in trying to use the a_current_field system variable I get the error:
        Variable "a_current_field" not found.

          I did look in the "Vault" and couldn't find the darn thing! I must have deleted it right after I wrote it which is what I always do.
          If things quiet down a little, I will re-read the question and see if I could write it again. Sorry.

            Thanks, G. Appreciate you getting back to me. I'm trying to create a function I can use wherever instead of having to use the literal field object names. This is the code I am using to perform the calc if the "+" key is pressed:
            parentform:deliver_date.text = dtoc(ctod(parentform:deliver_date.text)+1)

              Re: current field

              Just as a starting point, I wrote the function below, which is is generic for numeric and date fields. It is used by putting PlusMinusValue() in the OnKey event:

              Code:
              FUNCTION PlusMinusValue AS V ( )
              if a_user.key.value = "+" then
              	if a_user.key.event = "down"
              		vFName = current_object()
              		evaluate_template("vFValue = " + vFName + ".value")
              		if typeof(vFValue)="D" .or. typeof(vFValue)="N" then
              		   A_USER.KEY.handled = .T.
              			evaluate_template(vFName+".value = " + vFName + ".value + 1" )
              			evaluate_template(vFName+".refresh()" )
              		end if
              	end if
              elseif a_user.key.value = "-"
              	if a_user.key.event = "down"
              		vFName = current_object()
              		evaluate_template("vFValue = " + vFName + ".value")
              		if typeof(vFValue)="D" .or. typeof(vFValue)="N" then
              		   A_USER.KEY.handled = .T.
              			evaluate_template(vFName+".value = " + vFName + ".value - 1" )
              			evaluate_template(vFName+".refresh()" )
              		end if
              	end if
              end if
              END FUNCTION
              You could enhance the function with increment_value() for a character field but there is no function decrement_value(). I do not know why you would want this functionality though.
              Also, with numeric fields this functionality probably only makes sense with integers.

                Garry,
                Thanks a BUNCH!!!
                Here's my code and function.
                This code placed in the form's OnKey event:
                Code:
                dim vFldName as c
                dim vAdjust as c

                vFldName = current_object()
                if a_user.key.value = "+" then
                	if a_user.key.event = "Down" then
                		vAdjust = "Up"
                		date_adjust(vFldName,vAdjust)
                	end if
                else if a_user.key.value = "-"
                	if a_user.key.event = "Down" then
                		vAdjust = "Down"
                		date_adjust(vFldName,vAdjust)
                	end if
                end if
                FUNCTION:
                Code:
                FUNCTION date_adjust AS V (FldName AS C, Adjust AS C )
                	if Adjust = "Up" then
                		evaluate_template("vFValue = " + FldName + ".value")
                		evaluate_template(FldName+".value = " + FldName + ".value + 1" )
                	end if
                	if Adjust = "Down" then
                		evaluate_template("vFValue = " + FldName + ".value")
                		evaluate_template(FldName+".value = " + FldName + ".value - 1" )
                	end if
                END FUNCTION
                Thanks again. This will save so much time.

                  This is the revised function. Took out unneeded line.

                  Code:
                  FUNCTION date_adjust AS V (FldName AS C, Adjust AS C )
                  	if Adjust = "Up" then
                  		evaluate_template(FldName+".value = " + FldName + ".value + 1" )
                  	end if
                  	if Adjust = "Down" then
                  		evaluate_template(FldName+".value = " + FldName + ".value - 1" )
                  	end if
                  END FUNCTION
