Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DataSubmitted object and editable fields

    Dear experts,

I'm a little bit stuck with the issue below... Can you please help?

I have a Grid that represents data from a table. Primary key for this table is Id_number field. The grid also has a detail view with "Delete" button on it. However, when user clicks on this button I want to delete rows not only from the table the grid is based on, but also from the linked tables. These tables are linked to the first tables using its Primary key (Id_number).
I write this code in "CanDeleteRecord" event. To delete relevant records I have to know the key - Id_number. So I have to include it into the DetailView form. However DataSabmitted object can only read fields that are editable and I do not want to make Id_number field editable. But if I check the option "Hide row" it doesn't work. If I make the field Changeble=false I have an issue when adding new row.

Did somebody overcome this issue? May be there is some work around for it?
Any help will be appreciated : )

    Thank you in advance,
    Olga

    Yes...
    • Hide Row hides the column (row) and makes the value unavailable*.
    • Label shows a value on screen, but the value is still unavailable*.
    • Hidden makes the value available*, but does not hide the column. However, the screen value will be blank. Go figure.
    • TextBox (and others) show a value, and the value is available*.
    • Custom, I can't remember, I don't think it is available in code.
    • Label strips out any hard returns and presents data as a continuous string.
    • However, Label in a freeform will always be presented one line below any text that preceeds to it; so you have to use Custom there......

I could go on; it's worthy of a book. All of it is based on the nature of the web, even though it seems so odd.

    * unavailable to events and code on the A5W page.

But here's what you do - It's a bunch of steps. This is for Grids only, the process is different for a Dialog.
    1. Add and make that primary key field a normal text box. You need to do this in the area that is editable, Detail View if you have one.
    2. Pick a second field that IS visible, change it to freeform.
    3. In freeform, add in that primary field, and the field you just made freeform.
    4. Go back to the primary field and now click Hide Row.
    5. Change the primary field to Hidden.

I believe the original idea for this was provided by Jerry when I asked the same question two years ago.

Re: DataSubmitted object and editable fields

      Steve,

      Thank you or your answer!
But the sequence of actions is still not very clear for me. Can you please correct me in the wrong places?

For example I have "Customer" table with "Id_number" primary key field and two other fields - "Name" and "Email". So what I do in the grid DetailView:

      1. Add "Id_number" as TextBox field to the DetailView form
      2. Add "Name" field as a Freeform field
      3. Freeform layout for the field "Name" change as follows: {Id_Number} {Name}
      4. In the properties of "Id_Number" field set Hide row = True
      5. Change the primary field to Hidden - how to that? Isn't it enough to set Hide row = True in the properties?

As it is written in Help DataSubmitted object also does not see freeform elements, not only hidden.

      Thanks,
      Olga

Re: DataSubmitted object and editable fields

You have to try your sequence to see if it works. I couldn't say yes or no to just a list. But on 5, not it does not suffice to make the field Hide Row. You need to make it a type Hidden else it will show up (you were trying to hide the value).

Re: DataSubmitted object and editable fields

I have an updatable grid (no detail part), but my key field is of type Link since it is used to display another page. The help file implies this value should be available to the CanDeleteRecord event, but it is not.

Help file says these object values should be available in events
It can be any type except a label or custom control.
Its Column Properties > Hide Column property must be set to FALSE.
So I need to find a way to get the ID value so I can delete records in another table.

          Bill.

Looking at the page source in the browser for the key field I need
            Code:
            <td class="SunsetDataTD"><a id="V.R1.PART_ID" target="_self" class="SunsetDataLink" href="Part_brws2.a5w?Part_brws2_filter=Part%5Fid%3E%3D%220011223%22">0011223</a></td>
If there was a way to get the href, or all the source for this cell, I could parse it to pull the id I need from the filter expression.

Is there a way to get this in the CanDeleteRecord event?

            Bill.

              Hi Bill,

I'm not sure if it works but you can try he following:

              1. Create control with type TextBox
              2. Put the value you want to access in the CanDeleteRecord event in this field (to contain the link as text)
              3. Set Hide row property to True
              4. Set Editable property to True

I think in this case you can address this control in the event...

Re: DataSubmitted object and editable fields

                Bill,

When I upgraded to V9, I started having some trouble with using key fields for links to external pages. (seems to be OK for detail view links) Ever since, I've created a calculated field equal to the key field value and used that for the link. That seems to work.

Your key field can then be the usual type hidden, which makes the value available.

Sometimes it is hard to see the easy stuff. Pat, I had just come back to reply to Olga that her list made me think of using a calc field. Naturally it works as desired.

                  Thanks.
