Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"foreign" files included in shadow copy

We are in the process of migrating our data from v5 to v8. However, I noticed now on Runtime version when I create the shadow copy, it won't include couple of my files that are not located in the same folder as my main database. I downloaded the latest patch and it still doesn't work. Is there a way to include these files for shadow copying?

    TIA. Therese.

    just more info...

These files reside on the local drive of each user. It contains the serial numbering of the data entry user and at the end of the day it goes back to zero. So, the next day, the data entry user starts at number 1.

This makes the record unique for each entry and that's how it is filled automatically.

Is there a work around with this one?

Do you have the additional files option specified?
      There can be only one.

        Hi Therese,

If the files are supposed to be copied into the application directory, and you are using the genie to setup the shadow, look at the attached picture file.
There is an option to include additional files.

I did this one and it won't do it because it will only accept files from the main folder or its subfolder. This is my dilemma right now.

How did you accomplish it in version 5?

Re: "foreign" files included in shadow copy

In version 5, this feature was there. You can pretty much add any files in your table/set tab and if you do a shadow it will retain whatever files you have in there. However, I just found out in version 8 it won't let me do this.

Does anybody tried adding a .dbf that is not located in your main database and do the shadow copy?

Therese, I must be missing something obvious but I can't help myself and have to ask...

If the files are already on the local workstations, why would you want them included in the shadow copy of the server database that you are putting on each local workstation?

From the control panel, file, add table/set............

Will this give you what you need?

Because if file is not in the table structure of the shadow, the script and form will not be able to function.

Yes, if I do it for myself since I have the full version. I already thought of that and also having to just copy the shadow folder to each client. However, the next question would be - what if I made changes later on and have to do "Refresh Shadow".

Right now, I am testing for a few of the machines with RT and I just made a copied my shadow folder to them. So far it worked but we already noticed couple of glitches on refreshing of the number sequence. And this is probably because of me having to forced the files in shadow copy structure instead of having A5 do it naturally.

I'm still puzzled and perplexed, but will keep quiet since others seem to understand your scenario just fine. It seems to me that the "file" could be stored in a subfolder beneath the shadow folder on each workstation. Your scripts could be modified to look there for the file. Shadow refreshes wouldn't disturb the subfolder. I must be missing something.

                          Hi Tom,

Actually one of my apps uses a scenario that you suggest.

Was just trying to get some ideas going, as I am not totally clear how the file/dbf updates daily, etc. , and why it could not be referenced from the app to use it.

                          Regards

here's the Table/Set tab should look like on the shadow copy. the boxed files are the ones I can't include in the shadow copy.

                              Therese,

I know you are trying to make work what you had in ver. 5. I would bet if you explained a little bit more how it is supposed to work, you would get more suggestions on how to adapt to ver 8. Maybe you could incorporate the process into the application folder itself.
