Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    not enough experience to understand

I made a short app using contact manager as the basis. It worked fine for a year. A few weeks ago it began to act up. When the browse view was loaded and I tried to highlight a record or move from one record to another the following message came up:
Script: UI_Modeless_DLG_Box: Browse View: 29 if flag_odbc_table=.f.then variable"flag_odbc?table" not found.

I went back to an old copy of the application and the same thing happens.
I called up another application made 5 years ago and the same thing happened.
I took my backup computer and using that copy of Alpha5V8 and it had no problem on any of the above applications. Any ideas as to what is going on.

Do you have the same build of V8 on both of your computers?

Re: not enough experience to understand

With your troubleshooting that you have done, it does appear to be your computer and not Alpha that is causing this. Most times a complete reboot of the computer will cure that error when I have had it occur. If not then maybe another instance of Alpha is there (use Task Manager to see), spyware, virus software interfering......

If none of the above, has ANYTHING changed, including the install of automatic updates, in your prblem system?

Re: not enough experience to understand

It is possible that one of the Windows updates could have trashed something in Alpha. If all else fails, I would copy out the application and all its tables to a backup folder, uninstall Alpha5, then reinstall Alpha5, run the updates, and move your data back to its original location. If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would recommed that you begin backing out the Windows updates one-by-one to see if that remedies the situation.

Mike, thanks for the suggestions. I am looking at everything you suggested but cannot find any changes. McAffee is installed on both laptops. The offending laptop was new in February. Alpha5v8 was installed at that time and it seemed to operate well. I will keep at it --looking for changes that is. If you or anyone else think of something I certainly will appreciate it. Tom I am going to try your suggestion also. Thank you

Re: not enough experience to understand

Many hours gone and I have removed all updates back to April 9 of Windows. I found that the computer was set on automatic updates which I don't have set on my old computer. However I still have the problem. I also uninstalled Alpha, removed the folder since the uninstaller did not do this, restarted the computer and reinstalled Alpha. However it could not have been a clean installation as the activation window was filled in and all former databases were in the history. So if I have to have a clean installation how do it do it. I use windows installer.

Tom and all who have helped I finally went to Microsoft site and found out how to do a clean boot then restored the computer to the earliest point. A problem showed up immediately with ATI not functioning. I reinstalled Alpha and it works perfectly. Still have to solve ATI but at least it is not affecting the computer. Thanks to all and I am signing off on this problem
