Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    cannot open FoxPro .dbf files

I have a database of approximately 150 tables which was initially a FoxPro (Visual FoxPro ?) app that I would like to convert to Alpha.
Most of the tables came across as if they are encrypted.
Attached are two tables from this app. The table named ards.dbf came across fine, but the table named funcbehav.dbf did not come across fine.

Can anyone make a suggestion how I can open these tables easily? I am not mainly after the data, mostly the structure.

    Thanks for looking.

Behav func is encrypted and locked it shows

I have no idea how to solve that one unless you can undo it with the tools that locked it and encrypted it

      Hi Jay,

      I opened funcbehav.dbf in excel.

It is still encrypted, but does not seem to have any data, just field names.

Might give you a clue as to what is in there.

Re: cannot open FoxPro .dbf files

        Keith,
Thanks. Were you able to save it back as a dbf file and then open it in Alpha?
I am not interested in the data, just want the structure of the table so I do not have to re-create the table.

I do not have Excel, only Quattro Pro, and it seems to have an issue saving a dbf file. I'll have to try it on my daughter's laptop, which does have Excel.

        Thanks so much.

          Hi Jay,

There is too much junk around the field names to get Alpha to import as a working table.

            Jay,

I opened these in DBF Viewer Pro from: http://www.legendsoft.com

I PDF'd the structure for you to look at. There was only one record which consisted of only sample data.

Re: cannot open FoxPro .dbf files

                Took a little while.

It seems as if there was a hidden (corrupt index?) problem that wouldn't allow Alpha to open the file.

Looking closer I see that the offset to the first field is "2". Normally the offset should be "1" to allow room for the delete flag so the file may have been corrupt.

                Here it is.

                  Thanks Bob and Keith.
I finally got the files for the tables to convert to Alpha.
I could not get the legendsoft demo product to open correctly, so I went with something from dbfdoctor.com
Their product allowed me to save the file as a dBase IV format, so I was able to get what I wanted.
                  Thanks again.

                    Jay,

I don't know if you got your answer yet, but you need to convert the Visual Foxpro files down to the Foxpro 2.6 (A5) format. One way to do this is to open the file, then copy to another filename with the parameter fox2x. Then, of course, you will eventually need to rename that file back to its original name after moving the original somewhere else.
