Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5 running in a virtual machine - not!

Anyone here have any experience with this?

I'm running Vista Business Ultimate. In a Sun Virtual Box I am running Alpha 5 Versions 5, 6 and 7 under Windows XP Home.

I can't get any Alpha version to open a database. I get "Failed to open document."

Within the VM, A5V5 will open Alpha Sports, so I know V5 is okay. I have granted full access to every sentient being within ten miles. I have deleted the .muf file, just in case it's a Vista thing. I have placed .html files in the host machine folders containing the databases; virtual Internet Explorer can open them, so I know the networking is okay.

If I run through file --> open, virtual A5 will step through the host folder structure, find the correct folder and see the databases - it just won't open them.

The databases are about as simple as can be. There's nothing fancy in any of them, and they all work just fine in the "real world".

I'm stumped. Hoping someone has done this before me and knows the way through the minefield. Thanks.

    Gary,

What is the full path to the folder? If you are running Vista and have your data in program files, I have been told it could give you problems. Alpha does not support anything below V8 on Vista.

I run v7 on all Vista systems, but the runtime is installed to a folder on the "C" drive and so are the data files. In fact I put the runtime and shadowed data files all in the same folder.

    Hope it helps you.

I have no idea about sun VM. There have been discussions about it on the forum though. You might try a search or two.

      Hi, Dave,

Virtual Box is on my C drive; the A5 data is on a second hard drive (not just a partition).

Do the virtual machines have a registry? Alpha reads and writes to the registry.

          Gary,

Maybe this will help. I am on Vista Ultimate now and have had the same experience with Vista Home. I do not use a virtual machine at all.

The trick (I guess) was to install V7 in a folder on the c drive ( not program files ). There are potential problems installing to Program files that I felt I did not need. I have been running on this machine since it got here in December of '07 and on Vista Home since last summer. There have been no errors I could find and it runs faster than on XP. I have needed no external or internal system like VM to work on Vista. Maybe there is another reason for VM?

No problem with V7 runtime as well when installed in a folder on the c drive. I have V7 runtime on many Vista computers at customer sites.

As Tom aluded to, you need to run as an administrator with rights to the registry. Nothing else special except it is easier if you turn off uac.

A5 running in a virtual machine - YES!

I had been mapping my real world files to a drive letter in the VM. I opened that virtual folder and copied the files to a new virtual folder on Virtual C, and they open!

I will do some playing around over the next few days, to determine if virtual changes get passed back to reality, and will post the results.

Tom, yes, the VM has its own registry.

            Thanks, guys.

To close this thread, yes, I've got it working as described. When done with Alpha Five, drag and drop the contents of your folder on virtual C: back to the virtual drive letter that you mapped the real world folder to.
