Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Browse-Dialog data entry & edit

By popular demand ;), attached is a sample browse-dialog data edit/entry mini-app. The methodology for data entry/edit provides several desirable features including:
• embedded browse view of multiple records
• defacto "modal" protection of browse records
• entry or edit of a single record at one time
• locks out rest of application while user is in edit/entry mode
• reasonably attractive and intuitive user interface
This method tends to prevent accidental editing, entry or deletion of records. In other words, the user has to make a deliberate choice to so do. It involves some simple xbasic and provides easy flexibility for modification as needed.

Hopefully this is useful to someone.

Peter,

What version of A5 did you use?

I opened it up with V8 and it let me use the forms but I couldn't changed to design mode to have a look at your code.

Also the code tab is missing from the control panel.

Did you disable these on purpose or is it a glitch?

Sounds like you are using a runtime version of Alpha instead of a developer version.

Al,

You are right. When I double click on the adb files they now default to the runtime not developer version of V8.

Thanks for the tip.

Peter,

If I click on 'new button' on the form that has the browse and then click on the 'close button' of the data entry form nothing happens. It takes a second mouse click to close the form.

Do you see the same behavior?

Yeah, it's the "end" statement in the close button code.

Code:
p = parentform.this
IF p.mode_get() <> "View"
parentform.Commit()
[COLOR=Red][B]' end[/B][/COLOR]
END IF

topparent.close(.f.)
If you remark it out or delete it, it will close on one click. You might even want to remove the close button and simply put a parentform.Commit() at the end of the save button. it all depends on the nature of the form and what you want your users to do.

Mike's example, of course uses xdialog. In a simple example like this, xdialog is nice. On a more complex form a dialog is easier to construct - unless you are one of the many xdialog wizards out there.

Re: Browse-Dialog data entry & edit

Probably a better way to handle this is just have the close button with this line:
Code:
topparent.close(.f.)
Then in the form's AskSaveEnter event put the following:
Code:
result_code = ui_msg_box("Warning","Save enter in progress?", UI_YES_NO_CANCEL+UI_QUESTION_SYMBOL)

Your code is messed up. You have 2 IF statements w/o END IF embedded in your CASE statement.

Hello,
Well, My question is on Line 76, vWarrFrom ="". the vWarrfrom is DATE type. Why this syntax is not working?.
I made the several variables, something like
"Dim vJob as C"
"Dim vWarrFrom as D"
and I used the "Select .. Case .. End" script.
When I wrote
Case vJob ="" , Ui_msg_box (something...). and other variables. Those are Fine. but Soon as I wrote as Case vWarrFrom ="", Ui_msg_box (Something...).
The Error is indicated. I think I have to convert the Date Field type (vWarrFrom). I do not know how to convert from date type to character type.

I figured the "GOTO" syntax after I read the Xbasic book again. I missed the "Label(?)".
