Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I guess we should have asked this the first time you posted, but what are you trying to accomplish? Do you want an xbasic function that creates folders like Toby showed, or do you want to manually create folders in order to isolate and store Alpha's Reports, Code, Forms, Tables, etc.?

latter one.. dontquit is trying to maintain the project module wise as there were many modules are involved in the project.. inside the module folders again will maintain sub folders for reports, forms, etc..

Then the answer is probably No. Or at least, nobody has tried, probably wouldnt work, or would cause such hassle while using the program that it would not be worth any effort. This is based on how I know Alpha works at all of those intersections. For instance, there is NO report file you could isolate if you tried, it is part and parcel of the DBF or SET file for which it is attached. Alpha will expect the appropriate file to be right there next to the DBF or SET file. The database, and the web projects and the associated css or other files are where they need to be for Alpha to work properly.

I tried it when I first came across dontquit's request, because we might need a similar setup with subfolders for each customer.

I suspected it might work but when you select a component to insert into a page, it seems to ignore the folder and won't save... But when you create the component and page at root level and THEN copy both to a folder, it works fine too - so I suspect it's just a case of Alpha fixing the folder references in the component picker tool... or have a component of the same name at root level for each module, this will also work as long as they are the same type.

            http://www.charlesworth.biz/cTracker/Module1/index.a5w

With a bit of fiddling it's possible to use subfolders (as long as you don't mind either allowing or disallowing each module/folder by login group rather than allowing some groups access to bits of one module but not other bits in the same module).

You just have to amend the paths to css and images in the a5w page to add ../ before the path so it looks at the right directory.

              thank you,

will have a look at it and give a try.. i tried to create components and a5w pages in the sub folders and there itself tried to insert the component into the a5w and failed..

will check the idea of creating in root folder before moving them to sub folders..

              steve, we may consider this..

"its not just for reports we need sub-folders, there will be 100s or 1000s of components and pages in the project, right now we are trying to differentiate those things by having some prefix while naming those components based on the module, but it'll be more programmer friendly and easy to understand for the future programmers who will be working on the projects done by us if we can group and save them according to their modules.. its just exactly like how we keep our projects in different folders based on the customers, like how we arrange our mails in our mail box for easy access to the related mails"

If you have a set structure of files and components (even if they are only ever used in the module folders) at root level, I think it might be more standardized overall, because in order for the insert to work, you HAVE to use the same component names etc.

As for reports, why not keep it safe and move them somewhere completely off the web server and dynamically pull the files into the user's session folder as needed? I'd be wary of leaving any PDF or word etc. files to sit in a5webroot, personally.

                  andrea,
the reports which we generated from the templates in pdf format, we are storing them in user's session folder and afterwards copying to a different location as a cabinet for the users to go and access it.. so far no pdfs or docs in the root folder..

OK - I still think it might make more sense to put them in a5Data or somewhere else entirely and only call them up and copy them back to the session folder when a valid user requests a past report...

Curious, if not private information, what is the general purpose of this A5 program with thousands of components?

example like an ERP system.. where sales, marketing, purchasing, finance, HR etc., etc., involved..

i don't know whether we are doing it right way or not, but as of now, everything is in the root without any sub folders, the total of pages and components already crossed over few 100s.. may be 3 or 4.. soon it is going to be more and more.. :(

may be i need to go through the material & references on project setup & implementation.. took over alpha5 in the middle of some project and blindly following what the first guy started like a Good Sheep ..

if over the phone, may be can explain what is going on in a better way and get some tips from experts.. :) sometimes, having trouble in putting down the problem as it is and make the other forum users to understand what exactly we are facing..

know anyone doing support over the phone? :)

No I do think you're doing the right thing, thinking about moving modules into separate folders. It's a pain working around the existing system but you can do it, you don't NEED to have a mirror of all files in the root directory either, you could just have a "dummy_dialog","dummy_nav", "dummy_grid" and so forth component there so you can use that to insert the component code into the a5w page, then simply change "dummy_componentname" to whatever the name of the component in the subfolder is...
