Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I've got the same problem with the runtime. Custom splash screen appears using the full version but not the runtime. Shortcut is the same for both, except for the executable location (full version a5v9, runtime is a5v9 runtime).

Anyone found a fix for this? Thanks.

if you are running shadowed, be sure the bitmap for your custom splash screen is in the shadow folder on your workstation

We're not running in shadowed mode. Users will access the application from a network drive. The jpeg for the splash screen is in the same directory as the database.

This will be our first runtime application for our company, and they're anxious to see how A5 can work for us.

          Thanks.

It will run much slower non-shadowed.
But, going that direction, I would recommend mapping the network drive

            say you name it "Z"

then in the shortcut for all users you will need to note where the splash is, or you can edit the include file
            splash="z:\apppath\myjpeg.jpg"

Re: Splash Screen problem with new version AV9 and the New RunEngine ???

Thanks, I'll see if I can figure out how to get it to run shadowed. Right now I have one user testing it (reason why I haven't done the shadowing yet) and first thing I discovered was the splash screen not displaying on startup.

I don't feel comfortable changing it to shadowed and rolling it out to anyone else until I get this issue fixed.

              Thanks for you help though!

Not here but could probably set something up at home. We have a proprietary VPN server that would require you to have a VPN certificate before you could connect.

I could however, make screenshots and upload them if that would help.

Re: Splash Screen problem with new version AV9 and the New RunEngine ???

Well, I've tried several things trying to get our custom splash screen to work. Here's what I have on the shortcuts.

                    FULL
                    "C:\Program Files\a5v9\alpha5.exe" "G:\MIS\a5web\MARS_0606\MARS\ourdb.adb" -INCLUDE=G:\MIS\a5web\MARS_0606\MARS\mars.startup

                    RUNTIME
                    "C:\Program Files\a5v9 Runtime\alpha5.exe" "G:\MIS\a5web\MARS_0606\MARS\ourdb.adb" -INCLUDE=G:\MIS\a5web\MARS_0606\MARS\mars.startup

Works fine with full version, does not work for runtime.

                    Hope someone can help me.

Please list the contents of your startup file...

I'd make a shortcut in each version specifically for each version and see if that works...

Thanks to everyone for your replies! After re-reading my startup file I found the problem and its now fixed and the splashscreen is working!

The best news is I have received approval to move forward with rolling out the application and have 3 users testing it now. It is a full-fledged Help Desk system for our corporate offices. So far the testers are impressed, especially when they ask for an enhancement and its in place in a matter of minutes, thanks to Alpha Five being so easy to work with!!

                        Thanks again to you all.

Yes, I believe we would. I will verify with our VP but he will probably want to do that. We are about 90% complete on our Help Desk program. Its a desktop application, but I have also created a scaled down web interface, for users to view open requests, add a new request for assistance, etc. The 'meat' of the program is in the desktop.
