Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to DUPLICATE database & give new name

    Developed application for client "A". Client "B" needs same type of database. How can I duplicate the application and rename all the files so that I can then go in and change the references from "A to B" in the tables, forms & reports? I DON'T want to have to recreate every table,field rule form & report from scratch.

    Not sure why renaming "files" is necessary.

    Client identifiers can be stored in a table, and then retrieved on startup. Stored in variables of the right scope you can drop the variables into form headers, reports, and so on. Avoids hard coding customer identifiers in the layouts.

      John,
      But if you have already created such a hard-coded application as Tom advised against, then you have some work cut out for you. Any script, calculated field, or simply ANY reference to these hard-coded value will have to be changed when you change the names of forms/tables/scripts, etc..

      Make a backup of your database and then change a name. This can usually be done by right clicking and choosing "rename" while your database is open. (If you want the database name changed then close out the database, go into the database directory, and change the names of all the files that are your database name--.alb, .alx, .adb, .alm files.)

      Then open up a form, report, whatever that is related to whatever you changed the name on---the errors will usually come up and can be seen via the trace window. This can be very time consuming but can be done---actually is easy IF you remember EVERY place you have references to a name you are changing! :)

      PS--first post I see now...welcome to Alpha and the messageboard!
      Mike

        Okay Tom that sounds INFINATELY better than the "hard coding" technique I was using.
        I want to educate myself on the technique you alluded to. Where can I read up on this "as a novice" to this technique?

        Thanks,

          Hi John,

          This is a very easy technic.

          First you have a table with a single record that has all the fields you want to use throughout your application.

          In the code tab you create a file called Autoexec.

          With Action Script select Set Variables to Field Values External Table.

          Here is the code that Alpha generated for me.
          'Get value from selected field from a record in 'main_menu and store values in variables whose names start with 'VC'.
          dim tbl as p
          tbl = table.open("main_menu")
          dim recno as n
          recno = 1
          'select record number order
          tbl.index_primary_put("")
          'go to last record in table
          tbl.fetch_last()
          dim last_record as n
          last_record = tbl.recno()
          if recno < 0 then
          tbl.fetch_goto(last_record)
          else
          if recno <=last_record then
          tbl.fetch_goto(recno)
          else
          ui_msg_box("Error","Record number is past end of table.",UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
          end
          end if
          end if

          DIM Global VC_Addr1 AS C
          VC_Addr1 = tbl.eval("Addr1")
          DIM Global VC_Addr2 AS C
          VC_Addr2 = tbl.eval("Addr2")
          DIM Global VC_Addr3 AS C
          VC_Addr3 = tbl.eval("Addr3")
          DIM Global VC_Addr4 AS C
          VC_Addr4 = tbl.eval("Addr4")
          DIM Global VC_Company AS C
          VC_Company = tbl.eval("Company")
          DIM Global VC_County AS C
          VC_County = tbl.eval("County")
          DIM Global VC_Email AS C
          VC_Email = tbl.eval("Email")
          DIM Global VC_Fax AS C
          VC_Fax = tbl.eval("Fax")
          DIM Global VC_Phone AS C
          VC_Phone = tbl.eval("Phone")
          DIM Global VC_Post_Code AS C
          VC_Post_Code = tbl.eval("Post_Code")

          tbl.close()
          By setting the variables as global, the value in them is available on all forms and layouts.
