Hello,
I am working on an entry form that will be used to record First Article Inspection information, including a list of dimensions as found by our QA department. I have run in to 2 issues that I can't find obvious answers for. I am using AlphaDAO to query a SQL Server database.
The first is that I would like to display a default value in 2 fields that pertain to the allowable plus and minus tolerances of a given dimension. The text box field type does not include a default value option, but that also seems the to be the appropriate type to use. I can define a default value in the table definition in SQL Server, but in A5 the fields won't exist until after the grid is submitted. The dropdown option won't work either, because it also doesn't seem to allow a default value and it doesn't allow a value that is not on the list to be entered.
The second thing is I would like to display the result of the entered data, ie pass or fail, to be determined as a calculated field. The problem is that calculated fields seem to be only available with A5 tables.. I am using SQL Server via AlphaDAO. Would I still be able to assign a value to a blank field using an AfterValidate event? This is, again, a drag because it would only calculate after submitting. The result really doesn't need to be recorded in the table, because I can print a calculated field on the final report, but I would like to have the user get results while entering data, not just at the end when printing a report.
I have been focusing on using a grid for data entry because it seems to allow lots of lines of data to be entered, submitted, and viewed at a time. I don't want the user to have to press a button for each line of data, as there can be more than 100 dimensions in a single report. Can a dialog be adapted for this kind of spread-sheet style data entry?
TIA for any ideas..
Erik
