auto increment

I am looking for a simple way to have a field auto-incriment with each new record.

Any help will be appreciated.

Example, add a character field length 5 to your table and then in Field Rules select Autoincrement, and in Default to "00001". That's all you have to do. When you save a record using any method, the field will increment from "00001" on up.

Steve, do Field Rules set in the database typically carry over to WAS and online when the database is uploaded?

As I read your answer to this message, on WAS if I set a Field to autoincrement in field rules it will so do once on line and everytime a new record is entered via some type of component. Hence it would not be necessary to put this field on a form for entry.

The autoincrement will always fire regardless of how you enter a record, desktop or web. Hardly any other Field Rules carry over, and many should NOT set that you might normally. For instance, you should not set a Field Rule as required unless, or I should say, if you want a field required as entered from the web, you have to use the web component validate to enforce required. If you only use the Field Rule, it will work, but it will deliver an unfriendly message to your user AFTER the forum is submitted. The idea of setting it on the web component is it validates BEFORE it submits it to the database.
