Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy database

    I am trying to copy my 2008 database over into a 2009 database with only selected fields selected. When I do that and then try to add new fields my database is all a big mess. Everything is garbled! I have tried everything and do not know how to fix or what to do. If anyone has any ideas or can help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

        Carmen;
        I think Al asked you what operating system you were using because if it is "post" Win98 you are going to have problems using A4V6. When you add fields to your new 2009 database, you are "reconfiguring" it. If you are using Win ME, Win 2000, or Win XP, the database can be corrupted when it is reconfigured. If you are using Win98 or older versions of Windows, this should not happen.

        A4v7 and V8 work with "newer" versions of Windows. What Windows version are you using?

            Then if you want to stay with A4, I think you are going to have to upgrade to A4 v8.

              Re: copy database

              Here are some general questions I have:

              If we upgrade will we still have corrupted files?

              If we upgrade do we have to start from scratch?

              If we upgrade can we transfer files or do we have to rebuild everything
              etc: forms,indexes, database etc.

              How come I never had this problem before?

              Do you have any idea how much it would cost to upgrade to a newer version??

              Thank you

                Carmen;

                "If we upgrade will we still have corrupted files?"
                -- well, assuming that it is XP that is causing the corruption, no you will NOT have corrupted files when you try to copy your old database with A4V8

                "If we upgrade do we have to start from scratch?
                If we upgrade can we transfer files or do we have to rebuild everything
                etc: forms,indexes, database etc."
                -- in fact, going to A4V8 is the ONLY way you will not have to start over. All your databases, forms, reports, field rules etc. will not change and will work seamlessly in A4V8. If however, you go to Alpha5, you will have to recreate all your forms, reports etc. Only the data would be able to be transferred from your A4 into A5. However, on the downside, I don't know if it will work with Windows Vista (if you ever go to Vista)

                "How come I never had this problem before?"
                -- dunno ... is this the first time you have tried to do the change with XP?
