Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Related Table

    Hi Everyone .

How can I make related table inventory, this is what I am looking for to make.
Be able to add department, each department will contain category and each category should contain sub-categories.
Now should I create 3 different table or it could be done in one table as well.
How should I related these parent and child tables?

    Re: Related Table

    Hi Tom,

From what you say, "each department will contain category", question; is that one or many categories?

On the assumption that is many ctegories, yes you can have three tables, which makes for controlling the data easier. You will need to make sure there is an ID_Code for each record to relate the tables. Otherwise it would be two tables.

Will you be using the category and sub-categories tables as a lookups?

I have done something similar where the Area was selected from a lookup, that was used in a filtered lookup to the Hotels and that was then used in the filtered lookup to the Banqueting Suites.

You need to try and think backwards, what do I want as an end result and then how am I going to get there.

    Hope that helps.

        Not that I know of.

In what context would you be making the choices? Is this for a new record? To print a report?

It will help you better to submit a sample of your app for us to look at.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I have not made the application, because this is the first step that I have to take, but I have includes the diagram as a reference.

          Purpose of application:

I want to be able to manage my inventory and be able to look up and make necessary changes.

There are 8 changeable department - under each department I need to have different category like cigarettes or beer.

Under ciggaret or beer there are sub category like premium cigarette or generic.
and under premium my products goes. like Marlboro , camel, Winston.

I really don't know how to manage these table as far as creating it.

                Re: Related Table

                Tom,
One way would to have your main table be the Product table with fields for Department, Category, and Sub-Category. Then have the Department, Category, and Sub-Category either as lookup tables or tables to populate drop-down combo boxes on forms to add data to the corresponding fields.

It is very analogous to a vending business where you have Product and Product Types in which various other sub-Types could be created for large and small sizes.

As I said, just one way.....others have other ideas and mostly just depends upon exactly what and how you want your application to work. My application goes against some of what some consider to be the normalized way of doing it but I felt that certain circumstances warranted it.

                  Category
                  Sub-category

Need to know if there anyway when I select department, realated category pops up and with selected categroy, sub-category pops up.

For more understanding I have attached my entire application in zip file.

                    Hi Tom,

I have your app, where and how do you want this to work?

I see you have an Items table, is this where you want to store the data of the department, category and sub-category?

You supplied a diagram but you have not built a set based on the diagram.

The Category table needs to have both Id fields for the Department and the Sub-Category, as well as the Category field.

Have you looked at field rules?

There is no data in the tables, how can we test this for you?

                        Thanks for reply.

We can fill out the filed by dummy text for now, category - department and subcategory could save anywhere as long as we can look at it on item (merchandising ) page.
