Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating radio buttons with a custom control

    Creating radio buttons with a custom control

    I have used a custom control to create some radio buttons in a grid, as follows:
    if Data.USL_TYPE = "MULTI-CHOICE"
    USL_ANSWER_MULTI_render = <<%html%
    <div align="right">
    Answer:
    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="A"/>A
    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="B"/>B
    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="C"/>C
    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="D"/>D <br>
    </div>
    %html%
    else
    ""
    end if

    However, this currently means all rows share the same group of buttons. i.e. if I click a radio button on row 2, and then click one on row 3, then row 2 becomes un-selected. I need to make the "group1" specific to each row. So please can anyone tell me how to insert the row number into the above html so that the html that ends up being generated is specific to each row. e.g.

    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="A"/>A ' on row 1 and
    <input type="radio" name="group1" value="B"/>B

    <input type="radio" name="group2" value="A"/>A ' on row 2 etc
    <input type="radio" name="group2" value="B"/>B

    Confused, how can you create a button object that allows multiple True selections but saves the selection(s) back to a single field? Why would you not just create two button objects?

      Re: Creating radio buttons with a custom control

      My web site basically asks users questions. The answer may be a multiple-choice answer, or the user may have to type in some text. I was hoping to use a custom control to look at the data and decide whether to display some radio buttons, for answers A,B,C or D, or whether to accept some textual input from the user. But in a reply to my other question you have already told me that custom control fields cannot be used for data entry, so I may be going about it in completely the wrong way anyway.
      The problem I'm having with the radio buttons is this, in a two rwo grid:
      Q1 - What is the capital of France? A:London B: Paris C:Bonn D: Lisbon
      Q2 - Where is the Pentagon? A:USA B England C:Canada D:India

      So on row 1 the user clicks radio button B, and then on row 2 clicks on button A, which then off-clicks button B on row 1. This is because I am using a custom control to create the buttons. If I just use a radio button type control it all works ok. But I need to use a custom control, or some other technique, because the next question may be one which is not multi-choice, but one where the user types in the answer. Does this make sense?

        Re: Creating radio buttons with a custom control

        If you are using a Dialog, look at the Enable and Show/Hide functions. That can allow you to cause controls to appear/disappear depending on previous selections. Those features work but can become difficult if your criteria is complex.

        You also might think about creating two dialogs, one for each type of question. And then cause the appropriate page to appear depending on previous selection.

          Hi

          According to my knowledge using custom control you cant solve your problem. Because if u solved the radio button problem also, based on certain condition you may be thinking that you can make custom control text area right?. once u make as text area whole column will be text area. so i believe you cant do this using custom control.

          But you can do this you are putting bit effort.

          As you mentioned you need some times radio buttons and sometimes Text Area, for that
          Step 1 - You need two column. And make the first as radio button control and the second column as Text Area.

          Step 2 - No in the free form layout of the first column you add the second column ( that is the text area control column),and check the column hide property of the text area control column as true. so now in one column above you will have Radio button and below you will have Text area,

          Step 3 - After doing the above 2 steps , you have to write javascript in a5w page. and in the on initialisation of javascript you have to check the whether in the particular row which control you want to show. Depends on the condition you show and hide the control there.

          Thanks
          Robert--

            Timbo did you ever resolve this, I've ended up in a similar situation..
            Cheers
            Brad

            EDIT: I am (trying to) building an on-line self certification app. I had arrived at a point where I was able to build a questionnaire and enter multi choice options then using the a5w_radiobuttons function I could present a test, render the options as radio button choices in a freeform control which ran an xbasic function to get me the answer options linked to the question and then using a javascript function grab this value and stuff it into a hidden field in the grid as the user selected options. Then I created a button with a click event that fired off an Xbasic function I wrote which grabbed the values I wanted and stuffed them into a test results table. Where I got stuck was the radio buttons behavior did work as expected (like above), I finally solved this by by unchecking the row refresh method after edits property in the update settings of the grid. Who knew...

            Hope this helps someone...
