Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XP Pro and SP3?

    Hi All,

Before I install the latest update from MS, are there any known issues between Alpha and XP Pro and SP3?

I did a search and have not noted any, but that does not mean none exist.

    Keith:
I don't remember where it was, but I recall reading something about some problems after installing sp3.
If I find the thread, I'll post it

      Re: XP Pro and SP3?

I have still been still hearing about problems with SP3 on many tech podcasts. Question: Why do you want to use it? There is absolutely nothing in SP3 that you would not have by doing your regular MS updates. It is just supposed to be handy if you have to reinstall from an old OS disk and then you could run a service pack to get you up to speed right away rather than go through the many updates and reboots by updating manually. If you are up to date, I would not waste my time and take the chance of mucking up my system. I would only try it if I had to do a reinstall of my OS.

          Keith,

Running sp3 for about 4-5 months with no problems. It seems to be all the updates added together. Not sure though.

            Re: XP Pro and SP3?

Yes Dave you are correct. From Wikipedia: A service pack (in short SP) is a collection of updates, fixes and/or enhancements to a software program delivered in the form of a single installable package. Many companies, such as Microsoft or Autodesk, typically release a service pack when the number of individual patches to a given program reaches a certain (arbitrary) limit. Installing a service pack is easier and less error-prone than installing a high number of patches individually, even more so when updating multiple computers over a network. Also check MS's website here: http://support.microsoft.com/sp/

              Keith,

I use Alpha Five V9 Platinum on both Windows XP Pro (SP3) at work and Windows Vista (SP1) at home, apart from a few screen glitches which seem to have appeared since I installed the last Alpha patch - Link: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=75913, I have had no trouble running on either operating system.

                Re: XP Pro and SP3?

Installed sp3 on our network here (20+ pcs) over a month. Only complaint is intermintent "disappearance" of quick launch icons on the task bar. Clicking on the icons in the right area will bring the quick launch icons back though.

                  Re: XP Pro and SP3?

Obviously an extreme alpha novice here but ever since I purchased v9 it has been on an xp pro sp3 system at my work, and I havent had any problems that could be linked to the os. Not that I havent had any problems but they have all been user error since I am in the infant stages of alpha development at this point.

A little off topic but has anyone been running alpha under a linux based system? I'm debating on installing alpha on one of my systems at home and I wouldnt mind running it on my linux system...anyone have any success stories or huge headaches to share?

                    Joel,

you would probably be better off starting a new thread regarding linux and be a bit more specific as to what you want to do. The alpha development system does not run under linux, so I assume you are referring using linux as a fileserver?

You would need to try 'wine' although to date there isn't any compatibility information. Alternatively you could install a microsoft operating system through win4lin. I have not tried either of these methods but I would be interested in the results.
