Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server Licence Activation

Has anybody been prevented from activating their app. server license by some 'admin' rights issue. I have full admin rights on my PC and got the following on pressing the activate button: -

"Unable to create or write to file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\$$a5temp.txt", followed by, "You must have Administrator privileges to activate the Application Server".

    Bit of a show stopper.

    Re: Server Licence Activation

Are you running Vista? If so, make sure you "Run as administrator" when you launch Alpha. After activating, you can close Alpha and restart it normally.

      Re: Server Licence Activation

Thanks Lenny. I believe I already said I have full Admin rights.
I am not using Vista but XP Sp3.

Now, I have just gone through the HYSIOABOA (Have you switched it off and back on again?) process. I made sure all the firewall/antivirus/antimalware were switched off and then only installed the App Server. This then correctly activated once I had deactived my target VPS machine. I then installed A5V9, the A5SportsWebV8, the latest patches for A5V9 and App. Server and rebooted.

A few problems along the way. First the A5SportswebV8 I bought does not install its "Explained" help files - the tags on the menu are there but not the real thing. Then the 'web menu' page (its mainly green with 'Start Server' and 'Launch' etc areas) does not seem to understand that the V9 App server is running. The Launch link does not work, nor does the help button. On accessing the web control panel certain dialogs error before a blank quickstart box comes up (iePub.object.navigate method not found).

Ok, I persevere, and publish to my local machine. It works.

Now, I publish to the VPS, de-activate my App Server licence and re-Activate on the VPS. Guess what - same problem that I kicked over to Brett, which is:-

"This page was created with a Trial version of Alpha Five. The trial period has expired. To continue using this page, you must purchase an Alpha Five license.

Please visit www.alphasoftware.com to purchase your license.

IMPORTANT After you enter your Alpha Five license you will have to RE-PUBLISH this page.

When you republish this page, be sure to un-check the "Publish new or modified files only" checkbox."

Thats where I started 4 hours ago when I tried to activate my local App server.

So, I have an application that publishes locally but not remotely? I DID have it working when I first installed all this stuff 6 weeks ago, but it's almost like its timed out. What's certain is that A5Sports V8 doesn't play nicely with A5V9. In which case, when can I have my money back?
