Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

          Re: dbf files

          Hi Guy,

Do you copy the CDX files to the laptop also?

This is from the help file "Alpha Five file types"

          Table
          .DBF
Contains the table's data, one or more records, each containing one or more fields, and the definition of the table's structure. System toolbars are stored in a_toolbars_customized.DBF and system menus are stored in a_menus_system.DBF.
Table Functions and Methods, Record Functions, Field Functions and Methods
          .CDX
Contains the table index(es). This file is only present if you define index field(s). Alpha Five uses indexes to quickly find records.
          Index Functions and Methods
          .FPT
Contains memo fields, which are text fields of arbitrary length. This file is only present if you define memo field(s).

Edit: Just a thought, on the Vista operating system, do you have the correct permissions to copy the files to the the shadow/or other directory where the DBF's are supposed to go?

Depending on how you copied the DBF's, are they maybe read only?

I like to use Windows copy and paste, or DOS bat files to do my backups and copying.

The dbf file contains your data. Alpha uses support files .cdx. .ddx, .ddm, .ddd to hold other information about the table and layouts built on the table.

If you have a version of a dbf on one machine, copy it to another machine, make changes to the layouts, add records, etc, then copy it back to the first machine, the first machine will not know about the changes. If you rebuild the indexes on the first machine, it will see the added records.

To keep the two machines in sync you need to copy all the indicated files for each dbf.
                There can be only one.

                      Guy,

On your Vista laptop give the board the hard drive path you are trying to copy from.

Also show the path on the XP machine where the files are copied to.

                          Did you really mean before...?

You should update the indexes after you have copied the new dbf's.

If you have made any changes other than enter data you should also copy all of the support files as well and then also always update indexes afterwards.

                            Guy,

I am only guessing, as I use XP mostly. My only look at Vista is on a couple of my boy's laptops.

But on the laptop, being Vista, I believe there is a permissions issue, being that you put the data base folder inside "Program Files" directory????? I know if you look at the vista machine from the XP over a little network, you need permissions to look inside the "Program folder". I have run into this. But I think you should be able to see the c:\ ????

On both machines, why don't you make a test folder on the c:\drive of both machines and put your application files there instead. Open the data base with alpha see how it goes. Then make a test copy of your files to copy from the laptop c:\ drive folder to the desktop c:\ drive folder.

Maybe a Vista guru might kick in here.

Just a hunch, see what happens.....Ed
