Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Guy,

Copy the whole application folder, with all the files from one machine to the other.

      What is the result?

        Guy,

Reindex AFTER you copy the files over and let us know if that solves the problem. This has been suggested many times above but I don't believe you have tried this.

Also, WHAT files are you copying? Each table has several files that need to be copied together with it.

              Re: dbf files

              Other thoughts.

Have you looked at the file that you are copying to to make sure that it is actually being copied?

Are the date/time and size being changed to match the file on the thumb drive?

In the control panel, right click on the table and select properties. Under the statistics tab, you will see the actual drive, path and file name of the table. Is this exactly where you are copying the file to?

Is this table part of a set and the rest of the set is not being copied/updated/reindexed?

Edit: Missed you last post while writing this one. The fact that you copied the whole directory and things didn't work makes me initially think of 2 things. One, the Alpha system on this computer is corrupted. Two, it has been mentioned in other threads that file and path names can make a difference. Try copying the whole app to a completely new folder and keep it close to the root with names NOT using spaces (both file name and directory name).

This is really a shot in the dark

Is there by any chance that you have two working copies of the application - the one that you are updating and then another one that you are copying - what I mean is that you have two versions of the same app - your shortcut or whatevery way you are accessing it is one copy and the one you are trying to copy is an older app.

Again like I said, this is a real shot in the dark but that would explain why when you copy the files you are really copying an older version and getting the same old data and dictionaries and not copying the actual working copy.

                FWIW

                    Re: dbf files

I think I am working with only one file I copy it both ways I have used the windows copy and paste and the reg.dbf is the only file in the auction folder with that name i do not see it in the folder other than once.

I have also done this through the cmd dos way and the file reg.dbf is only on their once.

should I be looking some where else?

right now I am installing v9 on another laptop same brand but windows xp and i am going to try again to see if the same thing happens if it does not than i know it is the V9 problem with vista

                      Guy,

Do a windows search on both machines for the file reg.dbf.

Is there only one instance of this file on both machines?

                        Re: dbf files

Open up windows explorer (or whatever it is called on vista) and run a search for reg.dbf in ALL folders.

I had a problem with having two folders named nearly the same and was using one with my shortcut and then when I would copy (zip) it from windows explorer I used the folder with a similar name, and of course did not get the files that I wanted on the copy.

Again just a shot in the dark

                              Guy,

Your correct data information is in your laptop? Correct?

On your desktop, are you using a shortcut to open up V9?

If so delete the desktop icon.

Copy the entire database folder again from the laptop, to the c:\ root directory.

Do not use a short cut to open up V9. Just open Alpha v9 by itself.
Go to file open data base and open up the database you just copied.

Is it the correct data information?

Edit: Tom and Andrew for below. good tips...... (Tom, slow day at work here)

Is it possible that the flash drive has a problem - not allowing the new file to copy over the old file?

Do you have cd read write capabilities on the laptop. Instead of copying the files to the thumbdrive (flash) try copying to a cd and then see if the reg.dbf comes over intact.

                                Just a thought
