Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Created Filter table hangs

In order to limit a PO report to certain vendors, I created a table called 'SelectedVendors' with one field called 'CompanyName' (C41). It appears as a child to the Purchase Orders Table. I wanted it to be the parent, but there is not an option to promote it that I see.

So I set it up, related on Vendorreffullname=CompanyName and under advanced options set 'only if record exists in child' to prevent printing any but the vendors in the new file.

I had an original filter expression that accomplished the same thing; when I left the original filter in place and ran the report it was fine, as before. When I removed the filter expression (the new file was to achieve the same result) the report hangs whilie 'Initializing'.

Obviously, I have missed something here... <g> Ideas?

    Hi Wes,
    First off,
I wanted it to be the parent, but there is not an option to promote it that I see.
This can be done--I don't know what you could not find or do as I just created a new table....then created a new set and chose the new table as the parent. ?????

Regarding your filter--I would have to see it. A filter will change dependent upon a table's relation to a set---and sometimes when a filter refers to a child or grandchild table, there are problems in which sometimes using "flattenquery" in the filter will work....

Much easier to apply a filter to a parent so I think first you should try to create the set the way you originally intended to.

Also--why not just filter on the vendors that the table currently has??? Your method would work but seems a work-around really.
    Mike

Maybe 'new' is the key here - I was trying to add a new table into an existing set and make it the parent. I will try starting with a new set.
      Thanks!

OK, I can create a new dataset with my external table as the top level table. Now... can I use an existing report layout with this dataset without having to recreate it?

        Thanks!

          Mike -

In answer to your question about using the filter on the existing file.. that is how the report is set up now, but I was getting some odd results (see thread 'Printed Data changes Randomly' from 9/23) and Al thought it might be because of the filter length - (.and. vendorreffullname='x' .and. vendorref... etc)

So he suggested I use a table to drive the report with just the vendors I want in the table, cycle through it and don't use the filter for that..

Yes, from the A5 control panel, right click the report and copy it to the other set.

Sorry, Al.. the A5 control panel? I am in QRB, am I missing it or are you referring to an Alpha 5 element?

Which raises another question I was curious about - can QRB do most of what you can do from Alpha 5 - limited to reporting from QB of course - or is there a point where users typically have to move over.. (or if that's too vague a question, you can ignore it.. <g>)

              Thanks!

You can switch from the QRB homepage to the A5 control panel from the menu bar. View - (last menu item toggles from one to the other.)

QRB is Alpha 5 with additional features for QB and without some of the non-reporting A5 features.
Typically if you want more than a report/export, then you'll need the full A5 developer.
Or if you want to write back to QB, you'll need the full A5 and a QODBC read/write driver.

                  Thanks, Al -

That fixed it. FYI, the reason (I am pretty sure) QBR was hanging up was that the fields specified for grouping in the report did not have aliases for PurchaseOrder.dbf, which was the parent when I created the report. My guess is when I made the file I created the parent, QRB just couldn't find anything to work with.

Also, I would like to send you the report layout, if that's ok, just to see if this is what you meant. It does seem a little 'brute force' - I think I am probably going through the entire file for every specified vendor in the external file. Might be a more efficient way to do it. Not that it is slow at this point..

                  Thanks!
