Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Printing report works locally but on after Publish to a Host server

Printing works on my Developement computer but when I publish to a host computer and try to print it doesn't work. When I click to print a report a "Print To File" Windows pops up on the server (see image). If I click cancel I get this message.

    Errors in: event.AfterValidate code:

    Amyuni Low Level Print:
    Layout name: Item_Info@c:\a5v9\data\item.ddd
    Layout type: report
    Error communicating with printer

If I enter a name and click save it saves a text file full of odd characters, not a pdf version of my report.

My code to call the report comes straight form the Alpha Report Genie. No changes were made to what the Genie generated.

I havent worked with the Application server as of yet, but at the Alpha conference this year, it was mentioned not to use the UI elements. It was also mentioned that if you did use the UI elements they would pop up on the server.

From your description and the information presented at the conference it sounds like you are using a UI element. While I don't know of what to use in lieu of the UI element, I am sure others here will have ideas.

Is this report running from a web application or a desktop application? You wrote the question in the web apps forum, but your image, and the fact that you can print to file, makes it seem you are running it from the desktop environment, on your server.

Re: Printing report works locally but on after Publish to a Host server

        I found the solution.

By the way this is a web application. The problem occurred when I first published to a ZebraHost Virtual Server. When I tried to print a report from my application the Output File Name window popped up (see image in earlier post). Also, if you right click on the printer and select Printing Preference I got this error message: Printer Not Activated, Error Code 30. I still get the Error Code 30 even after the fix but the Alpha Five Printer driver now prints both HTML and PDF files and I'm happy.

I found the solution by just searching the web. This is what I did:

        1. In windows control panel, go to the printer panel
        2. Right click on the "Alpha Five Printer" driver then Properties.
        3. Click the Port tab
        4. Click Add Port. Highlight "Local Port" and click New Port. Add a new port name called PDF1. Click Close
        5. Make sure the check mark for the port used by the Alpha Five Printer is set to the new PDF1 port. Click Apply.

That all I did and it works.

That "Error Code 30" has always existed and doesn't seem to affect printing from Alpha. Probably just means Alpha deploys something less than the full driver and so you cannot access preferences.

Many thanks for figuring this out!

I have added it to our Alpha Web Application Server Setup Check List.
