Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    pdf viewer supercontrol problems

using the pdf viewer sample in the alpha sports example locks up the entire program for about 4 minutes, then it finally displays and you can exit or click on another pdf file in the list which locks it up for about it another 30-40 seconds. I have adobe reader 9. Does anyone else have this problem?

I use and demonstrate this on a weekly basis, with no trouble.

Don't know what to suggest to you though...

Steve! yes! I've downloaded all of your tutorial videos and I'm going through all of them throughly. They are pretty good. I guess if I have any questions or troubles I should just post them in this forum correct? Anyway as for this problem...

I tried redownloading and installing the Alpha 5 v9 software on another computer. Alpha 5 must have upgraded their a5v9_full_DL.exe install file on the server as this install was the lastest version already (I did not have to update it with another patch like on my main computer). I tried the pdf viewer sample in the alpha sport and everything worked, however this computer had adobe reader 8. I closed alpha sports, installed adobe reader 9, and tried again. problem reoccured exactly like I described. So something about Adobe Reader 9 breaks this feature / supercontrol in alpha 5 v9. I'm running windows xp 32-bit on both computers.

As for the instructional video 0203 talking about using the pdf viewer supercontrol, I have two questions:

      1. when you press the x-y button next to the "file name expression" box and press F4 (or double click the function thing) then look for the function a5.get_path(), it is nowhere to be found. does it not search all the functions or something? how would you go about finding that function somewhere? I only found it in the help files.

      2. the expression: a5.get_path()+"\\"+File-""

what is the -"" a the end of the expression do? removing it seems to have no effect on the result and I can't figure out what it does.

I have other problems but i guess I'll do a seperate thread for each one. Also, video 0802_AJAX_basics.swf has been removed from your server or something. It cannot be downloaded.

Yes, I already get too many requests for free private help.

Alpha updates its builds when it finds bugs, and some new features now and then too.

Ah, just checked - I'm using Adobe version 8. I'm tempted to try version 9 but need it too much, so maybe someone else wants to try this?

The search feature in the expression builder doesn't find everything. The help files, or better yet learning to use thing like the object explorer or XBasic explorer can be rich methods of learning. No one way I can recommend.

The minus sign is a relatively new method for Alpha - it trims the trailing blanks. I have yet to use it in general practice, though would like to get in the habit of using it instead of alltrim().

I'll pass that along to the guys at Alpha.

          Re: pdf viewer supercontrol problems

I had tested the pdf viewer earlier on my laptop with adobe reader 8 and it worked fine. Just tested again on my desktop with adobe 9 and it is definately very slow. Something is definately up.

Edit: Have sent in a bug report

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

Everyone should upgrade to Adobe reader 9 or at least update the ver 8 if they have it. They have found some securty issues with reader Ver 8. It may be these new fixes that is breaking Alpha.
