Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I format a number with a Zero pad in front of the number?

    Hi all,

I have been researching a problem unsuccessfully for several weeks, and wonder if anyone might have a quick solution for me.

I have a table that automatically increments a number that is based, in the first part, on the current year.

So, the number currently looks like this:

    80017

I want this number to display as: 080017

I need the number to show the same number of digits whether or not it is a 110017, for 2011 or 80018 for 2008, the first two digits would stand for the current year.

I don't think I can change this to text since I need it to autoincrement.

    Any ideas?

    Check out the PADL() function.

You'll need to convert to a string first.

    So, if MyVal = 12345

    and you want 012345

    PADL(ltrim(str(MyVal)),6, "0")

Julie, if your "number" is actually numeric (and not character) data, you cannot prepend a leading zero. Numeric integers never begin with a leading zero.

To do what you want the field must be character data.

You could also change the id to a character field.
You can autoincrement this field by using field rule : Autoincrement
and at data entry tab (field rules) , you entry simple default expression with a start value of "000001".
This way it will display as you want in any standard grid / dialogue without using display formatting.

          See example attached. regards, Ron

....Oooops, now I see your requirement is that the first character is based on the current year...You will have a problem then when the current year gets next year...Unless you build the field based on concatenating the current year together with your autoincrement field.

I tried some and come up with this. If you define a character field, which is autoincremented like I suggested above, then when you enter for the default value (under simple expression) the following expression:

          CONVERT_TYPE(YEAR(DATE()),"c")+"0001"
see last picture for the definition

Then you will get 20080001 and 20080002, etc
If you trim the first 2 characters you will get what you want. But I would stick to the whole year to forecome you will get into "century" problems with your application...Of course your field character length will have to be 8 in this case.

But if you insist you should enter RIGHT(CONVERT_TYPE(YEAR(DATE()),"c"),2)+"0001"

It is my experience you will have to define your table freshly with my last suggestion. If you make changes to the existing definition it seems to continueto work with the earlier defined expression. So start fresh. regards, Ron

              Thanks Ron,

I have been working on this, but am unable to start "fresh" with that field, as it is a pre-existing field with data in it.

I see why you recommend that - because the formatting code appears to change my field to 0001 if I enter this code in my "grid" for WAS.

I have converted the field to a character, but am having a rough time getting my Grid to display a padded zero.

I also tried using Steve Workings solution, but I do not know where to place the function PADL code in Web Application Server A5W file that contains the Grid.

Does anyone know where I would place that function for a Grid?

Perhaps I am trying something that is not possible in a Grid?

              Thanks,

              Julie
