Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to condense multiple submit buttons to a single submit button

    Hello all

Per our clients requirements, we have constructed a page to allow for editing of 6 related tables. We are trying to use as much out of the box functionality (Alpha web components) as possible and are running up against a major user interface obstacle.

We have ONE detail record displayed in a vertical left justified component, and 5 child grids off to the right of the detail data. The grids are all displayed without tabs all on one clean screen. It is pretty efficient, but each grid component has it's own dedicated "submit".

this means if the user enters data in any of the child grids, they must click submit for each "type" of data entered. This is extremely cumbersome for the user, and opens the door for missing data.

We would like to give the page a single submit button, that saves ANY and ALL grids displayed, all at once.

Should we be looking at one of the the various events associated with the web controls?

We are really trying to get the page to act as ONE web control... even though we have placed several controls next to each other.

Any ideas for this one?? thanks much in advance.

I don't have an answer on how to make a one-button button, but I did try an expirement to see what would happen if you did. Even if you did come up with a one-button solution it would have to fire each "Submit" in some sequence. The problem (at least in my simple test) is that each Submit refreshes the page. On the very first Submit only values on that particuar Grid will be saved, ALL OTHER just-entered values on all other grids or dialogs will be cleared.

      Kevin,

I think, to use alpha's built in components, you would use a tabbed grid linker - I have found that to be very slow thoug, and it would not give you exactly the effect you are looking for, i.e., all grids showing at one time.

Maybe, you could come close to that functionality, by make all the grids on the page be read only, perhaps except for one. Then have an "Edit link" on each row of each grid row. The edit link would show a popup windiw, in which the user would edit that record, click submit, close the popup and refresh the page. I think that would be pretty close.

        Kevin,

I am also thinking ... The way I described would work, but having to refresh the page after each change, with all those components on the page, would be slow. You could speed things up some by decreaseing the number of rows you allow to display on each grid.

But, this may be a job for AJAX, so that when you click the submit button within the popup, just that row of data is updated, no page refresh. And if that is the way you decide to go, I cannot help as of yet ...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Per usual, when we crack this one, we will post the solution. :D

I don't have time to model this, but I wonder:

If you put each grid into an iFrame, I'll bet you could put together a single Submit button that, with javascript, "clicked" the other five submit buttons.

You'd have to back up on your design a bit and re-do some work, but it might be worth trying.

I also think Gary's suggestion of using AJAX is promising. Wish I had time to fiddle with this one because it sounds like the result would be rewarding.
