Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mark (and others having a problem accessing a site)

Do a network trace to the site and see if you are getting through.

Typically I do a windows cmd - ping <URL> to make sure that I'm getting an ip address and that the target machine is responding to my ping.

Second - I use a program called samspade (free - there are others like it) and it shows a trace from my computer to the target computer and where the link is broken. It's very helpful in determining where the problem really occurs..

If you are not getting through to a site email the trace to your network provider to see if it's something that they are having a problem with and to the target site people to see if they are having a problem from their own end..

Interestingly, I'm getting through to www.alphasoftware.com with my browser, but the trace is showing a problem getting from hop 10 (209.237.128.125) to the next hop. Since we are both in Wisconsin, we may be having the same problem....

          Thanks Al,

BTW, I am located in Sheboygan and using my companies T1 connection I get a timeout error, but using the DSL provided by my U-Verse home connection I get a 500 error when navigating to Alpha' IP address.

At least, lets me know that it is not a specific ISP provider issue, but rather a problem at a router/switch somewhere where both requests cross through the same portal.

            Mark,
I can access Alpha's homepage but it sure took quite a while for it to show up....about 10 times longer than normal. Sure sounds like a snag somewhere and this big delay may cause many to time out (surprised I didn't).

I actually was trying to reply to their latest offer, and then can't get the homepage to display. My first thought was the place closed up like a few other software suppliers I have known.

I am hesitant to go any further with Alpha Software at this time.

Ironically, they use a webhost that uses IIS(7.0) to host their site........

That may be a rash assumption for having an internet connection problem that may be local to you (and me - some what) . I get the alpha web site to display without a problem, but as I noted there appears to be some issue with connecting to the main web site.

We should talk - I worked on part of the Kohler Y2K conversion and spent a lot of time in your area. My contact info is on my website...
