Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Request.Variables not found

I have two dialog components, each submitting to a SQL DB. Each one has "After Validate" code similar to the following:

    Code:
    	if eval_valid("Request.Variables.project_id") then
    		t.project_id = convert_type(Request.Variables.project_id, "n")
    	else
    		t.project_id = 0
    	end if
In one case the Request.Variables.project_id variable is found and set properly. In the other, no such luck.

The URL for the one not working is:
    http://localhost/add_assnResource.a5...&task_id=10028

Any reason why Request.Variables.project_id wouldn't be found using this URL?

Or you can provide the source for the dialogs so we can see what was built rather than just pointing us to the representation that results.

Most questions that are unanswered for more than a day are from lack of information from the questioner......

Sorry you didn't get someone to point that out before....

        Thanks for the kick, Al.

Since the trial elapsed I no longer have access to the source, and I'm not sure that I want to buy just to get to it. I can assure you that it's straightforward (using dialog fields to submit to a linked SQL database table - "t" in my example)

Since the URL contains "...?project_id=<some_num>&task_id=<some_other_num>" I can't figure out why a reference to 'Request.Variables.project_id' wouldn't be found. Both project_id and task_id should be "get" parameters, which should be included in the Request.Variables array (according to the documentation).

Any reason this wouldn't be so?

Actually with at the windows level, you can zip up the folder with the database and projects in it and attach it here, or send it to someone else.

I'm getting too old to guess and nothing is hitting me in the head as an idea.....

Fair enough. I had to selectively remove files from the archive to come in under the 5 MB max. I think everything I removed pertained to the Web Apps Demo project. My project was called "Scheduler".

I guess it would help to provide the dialog names in question :o

              - dlg_new_task.a5wcmp (afterValidate works for request.variables.project_id)
              - dlg_new_assnResource.a5wcmp (afterValidate throws error for request.variables.project_id)

You can nav from "projects.a5w" to select an existing project >> an existing task >> then click "Add Resource" (or something comparable) link to bring up the dialog.

Is there a reason that you are using request instead of session? I noticed that Steve Wood mentioned that you should use session in this post?

Note this line from the help system for request variable.

Note : Request variables are local to the page (script) and must be passed to any functions defined on the page.

Overhead. I was trying to keep this test app simple.

I noticed that Steve Wood mentioned that you should use session in this post?
His comment deals with getting data values from a populated grid component. I'm using a dialog in this case and, again, trying to avoid sessions.

Saw that. Not sure how to "pass" in this context. Also, I'm not doing anything different/special on the one that works than the one that doesn't. Hence most of my confustigation.

I'm evaluating Alpha 5 more than anything. This situation makes me hesitant becasue I'm guessing that the fix is trivial due to my inexperience working with the tool. However, the lack of debug tools or other utilities makes me question whether or not using A5 will truly be a time saver. I might be better off biting the bullet and building php classes.

Your ideas are colliding... The simple way to do this is with session variables.

I don't think sessions will add sufficient overhead for you to pay for the swimming upstream that you are doing...

                        Re: Request.Variables not found

Its hard to follow the app in your download since it work directly against the (missing) SQL database. I see where you are putting in the request variables. Although I can't quite follow, I can say request variables only exist if they are provided to the web page at the time the page is opened or refreshed in the browser. As a test, add the following xbasic to an A5W page:

                        ?request.variables.test

If you open the page in a browser, the page will give a 500 error. If you append ?test=steve in the URL, the page will display "steve". If you again refresh your browser, but first remove the ?test=steve, it will again issue a 500 browser error because the variable does not exist.

So, in the case of a web component, when you click Submit (or any button that refreshes the page) if you do not AGAIN recreate that request variable, it will not exist, and asking for it will cause an error.
