Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Age in Years, Month, Days

    This is a Function I developed in Version 9 but should work in any version.
    Supply is with a Birthdate or Hire date etc. It will return an age in the format:
    20y 4m 5d - you of course you may customize it any way you like.

    FUNCTION AgeYMD AS C (DOB AS D )
    If DOB = { / / } then
    end
    end if

    Years = Age(DOB)
    TYBD = addyears(DOB,Years)
    Months = Month(date())-Month(TYBD)
    Days = Day(date())-day(DOB)
    IF Days <0 then
    Months = Months - 1
    Days = date()-Addmonths(TYBD,Months)
    end if

    AgeYMD = LTRIM(STR(Years))+"y "+LTRIM(STR(Months))+"m "+LTRIM(STR(Days))+"d"
    END FUNCTION

    Re: Age in Years, Month, Days

    Hi John,
    Thanks for contributing.

    You may want to add a bit to this as when your birthdate happens to be in the same month as present, it does not come out correctly (negative month).

    Maybe just this--I have not tested thoroughly however.
    Code:
    IF Days <0 then
     if months=0
       months=11
       Days=day(date())
      else
       Months = Months - 1
       Days = date()-Addmonths(TYBD,Months)
     end if
    end if

      Re: Age in Years, Month, Days

      Hi John,

      It's nice to have a contribution so early in your posting history (32).

      You may want to look at an old post of mine, "AgeMonths function - difference in months".

      It's good to see you using a UDF. This is the best way to add code anywhere in Alpha Five. Using code in scripts is not as good, as I have discussed for years within the message board forum.

      The code I showed generates the same years, months and days, but returns the results as a combined number. If you look at some of the techniques I used in my code, you will find some of the important tips to make future code of yours more bullet-proof.

      One aspect is to get the system date once, so that it can't possibly rollover a date between accesses. This can cause failures if running the code at just the right moment (typically when running reports overnight that start before midnight and end after midnight). My routine has a reference date input that defaults to system date. That routine was written before Alpha Five had optional trailing parameters, so today the UDF would have the 1st line like this

      function AgeMonths as N(DateValue as D,CompareDate=DATE() as D)

      Another thing that jumps out is the Age() function, which is a relatively recent addition of a system function. I do know it was in version 7 and later though.

      A general warning is also to be careful of using ADDMONTHS() with negative months. A date at the end of a month such as March 30th can end up as February 28th, as in

      ?addmonths({03/30/2007},-1)
      = {02/28/2007}

      Best way to resolve these issues is to always normalize the date to the 1st of the month, calculate, and then add the day value back in.

        Re: Age in Years, Month, Days

        I thought this might happen - I hit the post button saw I pasted the unfinished code and had to leave. Anyway here is the semifinal version. It works well (at least I haven't been able to find any holes in it yet) but can be reduced still further (I plan to do that in the near future). Ira - Thanks you are right on the Age() function so for those using A5 prior to version 7 change the YEARS = line to "Years = int(date()-DOB)/YC)" without the quote marks.

        FUNCTION AgeYMD AS C (DOB AS D )

        If DOB = {//} then
        end
        end if
        DIM YC as N
        YC = 365.2425

        Years = Age(DOB)

        Months = int(((date()-DOB)/YC-int((date()-DOB)/YC))*12)

        Days = int(((((date()-DOB)/YC-int((date()-DOB)/YC))*12)-int
        (((date()-DOB)/YC-int((date()-DOB)/YC))*12))*30.436875)

        AgeYMD = LTRIM(STR(Years))+"y "+LTRIM(STR(Months))+"m "+LTRIM(STR(Days))+"d"

        END FUNCTION
