Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    I need more speed!

Anyone care to view my app and let me know what your opinion is regarding the speed? Remote connection also seems very sluggish.

    Core 2 Quad CPU
    2.4 GHZ
    1280 RAM

    Professionally hosted.
    I have the latest build.

    Any comments appreciated!

I would agree that you need more speed.

It took 4 to 5 seconds for me to load the front page and a second or two between pages. I am a long way off from publishing my site but I am counting on it being much faster.

    Nice looking site however.

Samples/Examples Menu - i get a java error - also you must check your speed result with the isp before going public, speed is an issue for you - good job with the site though. You may be better off with a VPS of your own with them or go daddy.

        Eric,

Yes, your pages seem awfully slow, but take heart! There are faster results available.

I can't tell what the problems are that cause the slowness without seeing the pages and components, but I can offer some comparisons.

Here are three live sites that are also hosted on ZebraHost that you can use for comparison:

        http://www.asqpdx.com
        http://www.wsahq.org

These sites also feature job postings.

          Re: I need more speed!

It took me 12 seconds for the Contact US form to appear.

after adding some garbage to the form, upon clicking submit, it took 15 seconds to receive a confirmation.

BTW, I put garbage in the email address and it accepted it. Some validation should be added to atleast require a properly formatted email addy.

If I find more, I will let you know.

Take pieces and chunks out until you find the culprit.

Or, start rebuilding a new, seperate test page one chunk at a time, publishing it, timing it, until you find the problem.

              Re: I need more speed!

I stripped my header and footer of all code and published. No discernible difference.

Pages have either a grid or dialog with a nav bar. Some grids are complex...

Guess will look deeper into the possibilities.

My host is looking into this as well.

Thanks for your input so far!

                  Speed = unbearably slow.

Colours = Coordinated colours but not to my taste

Note the Side menu Bar // appears to me to be way too cluttered for my taste, maybe some separators would help.

Sorry for Negative feedback, but I thought I'd be honest

                    Speed = too slow

Much of your site uses the abbreviation "CP" it took too long searching for me to identify what "CP" was an abbreviation for. Abbreviations are a poor choice unless defined. Need that up front and center, page 0.

                      Re: I need more speed!

Nav bars are typically very fast, so I would focus on the grid(s).

Do you have indexes set up for the tables the grids are based on?

                        Re: I need more speed!

                        I'm getting great testing ideas.

Pat, some grids have several calc fields using the lookup. As you know the lookups use indexes.

Most tables have at least one index. None have more than 4 indexes total.

Pages load much faster on my own development machine.

BTW thanks Pat for the links to the other apps.

                          Eric,

Using lookup fields in the grid can slow it down since the table must be opened to read the value for each row.

Since most of your grids are read only, consider using a view or base the grid on a mapped table. That should speed things up a bit.

Speed issues aside, nice neat site, but somewhat busy, layout - at least on some pages. What I find confusing is the simultaneous Hz & Vt menu bars. My D-Link router also has simultaneous Hz & Vt menu bars, and I find that confusing, as well (no matter how many times I use it). You might give that a little thought.

Its definitely server performance, not the web application. Every page loads slow, even just opening the favicon.ico. Create an empty test A5W page to test. If that is slow, it must be the server. Check the CPU and memory consumption. Even a minimal DSL speed connection would be faster than what you have. I tested using a website speed monitor and the first response from the server is much longer than it should be.
