Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Barcode Fonts

I have recently been doing some work with barcodes and I have found the BEST Code 39 or Code 3 of 9 Barcode font.

This font shows human readable characters and even at small DPI's is quite readable and useful.

I have used many barcode fonts, but this one is exceptional, and best of all, it is FREE.

I have attached a zip file, but if you would like to know more, you can go to:

For more info on Code 39, you can go to:

Well, I was just curious, I am making a database for a client who wants to include, if possible, a "UPC" barcode field that will hold the barcodes from his products. I have searched and cannot find any UPC barcode fonts. Any suggestions??

You probably mean "free" upc fonts. Nope, I've never found any either.

You don't want a "UPC" barcode field . You want a character field to hold the upc. What he probably wants is to be able to print upc barcodes on labels or reports. To do this you print the stored upc, encoded if necessary, using the appropriate font.

I don't believe you can just print UPC barcodes legally. You must register your company and the products for which you want to assign UPC codes....I think.

More info on one company that provides the service is here...

          http://www.uc-council.org/

As I recall once you get all setup with them - you can purchase the appropriate barcode font. Other companies sell the fonts too but as I recall it is not legal to use use them without "registering" your products in some way.

You can Google UPC as well and get a bunch of info.

          Regards,

          Jeff

            Re: Barcode Fonts

I agree. He just wants to be able to have the barcode show up on reports. The product and code already exist, it is like having a toy truck, and on the sale tag it has a upc code. That code he wants to be able to store it on reports. However, It doesn't seem possible unless "he" purchases the equipment.

              Re: Barcode Fonts

If you have a retail product, you already own the UPC code. It has been awhile since I worked with UPC's, but I remember finding a database with ALL retail products (At the time). You must remember that companies purchase these EVERY day.

If your client just needs their own UPC's entered, they most likely have their list of UPC's.

We use the Orbit MS7520 USB Barcode reader to read barcodes. We purchased them on Buy.com for around $200 a piece.

I wrote my application for a warehouse that processed the returns from a drug store chain. The barcode was read and my application showed the details of the item.

Based on whether the item was perishable, most items were donated to local charities or returned to the manufacturer or distributor.

One thing I learned quickly, especially with the UPC barcode, there are so many variations by manufacturers, that I think our success rate in finding the right item was only about 90%.

We used the UPC's to reduce data entry mistakes. It helped alot, but not as much as I liked. Many UPC's have to be added almost every day due to the amount of products sold in this country.

After learning everything I didn't want to learn about UPC's, my current project is required to use Interleaved 2 of 5. Of course one of the hardest barcodes to program, and I cannot find a FREE Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode font. I have found a couple of ActiveX products, but I think I will write xbasic to do the translations from ASCII to I2of5.

For further information on Fonts, you should check out the website:
http://www.idautomation.com/ They have ALOT of information on almost every barcode out there.

Thanks Barry. This company is a retailer of only one type of product, firearms. He just needs to have a field that will store the barcodes so when he prints out a tag, it is on the tag.

                  Re: Barcode Fonts

As a retired Police Officer I can relate. Can I get a discount on a new gun? I had to ask..My Glock is getting kind of old and I was thinking of going for a new one soon anyway.

BTW...Since your client is selling the products, you can definitely reprint the UPC's with no legal ramifications. It would be illegal to create UPC's that have been purchased by other manufacturer's. It's not like you are taking Coca Cola's barcode 490440 for the 20 oz. bottle (That's the code I used for testing and is stuck in my head!) and using it for a Glock 17.

I have been working with Interleaved 2 of 5 and I had to write my own conversion module to get the barcodes correct. It was alot worse than I remember with UPC's. But I didn't have to write barcodes in that app, but in my current project I do.

If you need any help with Interleaved 2 of 5, let me know. Once I got my brain around it, it wasn't so bad.

As I said previously, if you need a barcode reader, check out the one I mentioned above. It has really worked well for us.

                    Re: Barcode Fonts

Thanks Barry, I see your point. I checked out a number of ways to do it, but I think at this point, the user should go to a program for creating the barcode. It is not expensive (compared to the cost of this when finished) and easy to use. Now, as to you getting a discount, Just FYI, I am applying for my FFL and that is why I am so bullish on getting this app perfected. I plan on selling as a side thing to my 9-5 and only to law enforcement, EMT, and the like at only a couple points above my cost unlike most firearms dealers. Once I get it all set, you will be my first contact.

                      Re: Barcode Fonts

If you are looking for a program that will print ANY barcode on a label, check out the FREE DYMO software that comes with the Labelwriter printers. You can download the software from the DYMO site.
                      https://global.dymo.com/enUS/RNW/RNW...hp&p_faqid=101

In all my years of using it I have never tried to send a label to a regular printer, but it might work.

The software would allow you to create a table of all the UPC's and print them as needed on a variety of label sizes. That's what we use and it has come in handy.

I also have an OLD program called Labels Unlimited 2. Maybe you can find it on the web somewhere but that was my first label program 10 or 15 years ago and it is still in use at a couple of client sites.
