Default Application server starting (not needed, yet)

Is the application server supposed to start when running on a single machine?
Things are really slow. When installed, just clicked on everything.
What should be done to run in a test environment? Should the server
be run on a stand-alone machine (down the line) when ready to start
    testing on a network?

Never mind. Just found the option not to run at startup and check for updates all the time.
    View, settings. Nice.
