Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Insert (Null)

    I am trying to create a form and/or browse to update an active link SQL table.

    The A5 documentation indicates that A5 'does not really have the concept' of NULL, however, apparently the underlying app requires that in certain cases, NULL must be used.

    In SQL Enterprise manager, a NULL can be inserted using CTRL-0.

    Is there a way to replicate this in Alpha?

    Attached is a screen shot of the browse with the (Null).

    Please understand that I am not a professional programmer and am just starting to work with active tables.

    Have you tried

    null_value()

    ?
    There can be only one.

      Thanks for jumping in Stan.

      Are you saying somehow create a script that would use that command to populate the field that currently has focus in a browse or form?

        Re: Insert (Null)

        If you want to put a null into a form field whose object name is

        name

        I would code a button with

        name.value = chr(0)

        for a character field type.
        There can be only one.

          I hope this doesn't sound too dense. You might be surprised at what I've been able to develop without much help, but I'm having problems wrapping my mind around this one.

          Let's say I have a record in the form. There are a few fields that might have either data or null.

          I would create a button related to each field that would cause that field to be updated with a chr(0) 'null'?

          Sounds pretty straight forward if I'm getting it.

            Re: Insert (Null)

            In addition to this, I seem to remember that to set a numeric to a null value you don't use the number_field.value, but number_field.text="" .

            EDIT: this is the way within Alpha and if this script is to be used for the SQL side then whatever the syntax used in SQL would have to be used....my two cents might be worth less than a cent in this case!! :)

              Not at all, I don't have a clue about working with SQL Enterprise manager so I don't know whether this will work the way you want.

              You could create a set of buttons or one button that nulled several field objects.

              Code:
              name.value = chr(0)
              address.value = chr(0)
              type.value = chr(0)
              Understand that I am just guessing that this might work.
              There can be only one.

                I have just done a search on "NULL Selwyn" and it has brought up lots of posts on this subject.

                I will shortly be needing the same information as we are in the process of active linking to Mysql etc

                  I should have broadened my search. I tried SQL NULL and got almost nothing.

                  I'll give Stan's suggestion a try and report back on my results.

                  Thanks!

                    John,

                    No need to go through all this work.

                    Re-establish your active-link table (re-do the link)

                    Under the Active Link "Options" screen find "Miscellaneous"

                    Un-check the option: Show blanks instead of (NULL)

                    This will put the (NULL) 's in for you.

                      John,

                      I need to add something here...

                      Actually you don't need to re-do the link. You can right-click on the active link table and edit the link definition.

                      Then UN-check the "Show blanks instead of (NULL).

                      Note: Most all of my links are to MS Access tables, I believe there is no difference in the options for linking to a SQL Table.
