Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Passing Variable that contain "-"

I have a field value that contains a "-" in the string. For example "55515-1" or "55515-2". I use these values to link to another page that is filtered using these values.. What I have found is that everything works fine if I don't have the "-" in the string.

    See attachment.

As you can see the V_Itemno = 55515%2D1, is the string that is passed. The "%2D" must represent the "-".

I can't see any way to wrap the value up so that it does not get changed. Anyone got any advice on what I am missing here?

    thanks

Your browser is automatically encoding the dash. But the Application Server automatically recognizes the encoding and decodes the value before storing it in V_ItemNo for you. Are you experiencing an actual problem, or just wondering about what you see in the browser's address bar?

This is an actual problem. The V_ItemNo value is used in a filter for displaying just one record. I need to understand how to code it differently so the value is not changed.

The value seen by your filter should not be getting changed. Browsers automatically encode some values in URLs. You can't do anything about that. Servers automatically decode them though, so your application ends up with the actual value. %2D is a valid encoding for -, and the Application Server decodes it upon receiving the request.

Can you be more specific about the problem you are having? I do not think that it is related to URL encoding and suspect that there is something else going on here.

          Lenny,

I thought I would change the "-" to a "_" to see if this made a difference. See attachement. -2 is the initial link on one screen and -3 is the resultant screen. As you can see using the "_" the same thing happens but the code, as would be expected, has changed to "%5F".

As you can see from the screen shots when I set up a variable with just a number then this works. The variable with the "-" or "_" does not. This is using the web server on my laptop.

Is this a browserr issue or a server based issue. I don't know enough to take this further. Could it be a bug in that the content of the variable is not processed correctly? Am I using an illegal character?

Resolved. Since I could not understand why there was an issue I deleted the Web pages and then recreated them. The variables then worked. I can only assume that there was some corruption or miss configuration hidden somewhere.

I think that during the development, adding and removing object left a reminant of code that messed this up. So allways start fresh when you get an error.
