Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Automatic record entry in embedded browse.

I am a relative novice at database construction and new to this forum.

I have set up a database to manage the crop records on my farm. The main table is 'Fields'(the agricultural sort!) with child tables, 'Cropping' and 'Cultivations'. I have embedded browses for 'Cropping' and 'Cultivations' on my main 'Field' form, joined by 'field_name' and 'harvest_year'. I also have an embedded browse listing all the Field (agricultural) names so that I can jump easily between Fields. All this works fine.

I now want to set up another embedded browse so that I can batch enter (say) cultivations. We frequently perform the same cultivation on a number of Fields which I can enter by going to each Field(agric) in turn. This can get long winded. I have a 'select_box' field (non-agric.!) to make a selection of Fields and I would now like a one-click way of creating a new record in the 'Cultivations' table for each of my chosen Fields (agric.). I realise that this new embedded browse must have a different join to the other 'Cultivations' browse (see paragraph above) and I think a join on 'harvest_year' alone may work. But I can't fathom a way of then automatically creating the new records in this browse.

My expertise is limited to action scripting and even that is pretty thin.

I think this is probably as clear as mud, with the confusion of Fields and fields, but I am hoping someone can help.

    Happy Christmas.

    Nigel,
I am currently working on an application for an agriculture group where I do this for several of my tables, but, I think it has to be done with xBasic. Didn't even look at action scripting. What type of info are you keeping in your "Cropping" and "Cultivaiton" tables?

Thank you for your interest. My cultivations table is pretty simple, with fields for 'fieldname', 'harvestyear', 'hectares', 'cultivationtype', 'applicationrate' and 'yield'. The cropping table is similar but with a 'variety' field (linked to a Crop description table) in place of the 'cultivationtype'. By changing (updating) the 'harvestyear' field in the Fields table, I can extract the appropriate data from the Crops and Cultivations tables. I also have a 'selectbox' field in each table so that I can run a 'find'. Does this help?

        Nigel,
By "Variety", I am assuming what is planted. What is "Cultivation_Type"? Also, how do you want to determine which Cultivation record you want to duplicate/copy? If you are creating new records in the Cultivations table, you don't need another browse. The records would be listed in the current browse that is tied to the Cultivations table. As always, if you could zip up an example app, it would be really helpful.

          Ernie

I hope the attached sheds some light. This is a work in progress and far from complete. The unformatted, embedded browse on the Field Details form (this is my main form - the other is a practice form) is where I was hoping to list the new cultivation records created for the fields chosen from the field list. I thought that with the use of variables, I could create the batch of new cultivation records with the click of a button (Select Fields For Cultivation).

I appreciate your help. Please don't waste too much time with this over the holiday period - just some help with the batch entry process would be great.

          Thank you.

            Nigel,
Haven't yet had enough time to get into your app. Did open it and looked around. What I did notice, first, is that you haven't used any of the field rules from any of your tables. In your sets, you have some tables linked by "Field_Name" without any lookups done. How do you maintain integrity of your data if you just type in the Field_Name and it may or may not be spelled right?
The "Field_ID" field is not set to auto-increment, so I am assuming you took care of that on data entry. I very well could be overlooking something, though.

              Nigel,
I am not certain exactly the details of you structure and direction, but attached is an example of how one might select some fields from a browse object, collect cultivation information using a xdialog form, and then add that information to a cropping table. I just downloaded your example and will look at it more. See if this example is on the right track.

                Mike and Ernie

Thank you both for your respective replies.

Ernie, I have been using Lotus Approach and have been experimenting with transferring to Alpha 5, so this is very much a work-in-progress and incomplete. I am maybe making the mistake of trying to do things in the same way as I did in Approach.

Mike, I think your reply could be very helpful if I was more conversant with xbasic. I will play around with it and see what I can get out of it. If nothing else, I think I've realised that I need to learn xbasic.

                Season's greetings to you both.

                Nigel
