Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Controlling user input

    I have defined a field as character LEN 2 and want to limit the input to only 2 characters and numeric. I want to stop entry after 2 characters and set a mask for numeric input. Can someone point me in the right direction to do this?

    Re: Controlling user input

    Go into field rules for the table

    Select the field that you want to mask

    Select the Data Entry Tab

    Then go to mask style and select simple mask

    Then in the mask field enter two zeroes 00

    Now when the user enters into that field on the form the only thing that can be entered in that field is digits (numbers) and it will only let you put in two numbers.

    Hope this is what you want

      Tom, I realized after I sent the post that I had neglected to say that the field is a variable.

              Since the variable is on a form, you can use the onchange, or candepart events to check the value....

              Or since I re-read your question, the onkey event can be used too..

              But there are not field rule type options for a variable.

                Re: Controlling user input

                Based on Al's reply I thought I would try a workaround.

                It is not pretty but it might help

                I have attached a zip file - just one of my test apps. It has an onkey event that looks at the keys typed into the v_test variable (a session variable) and if it is a numeric key it will go to the next key entered. If a letter key is entered it won't move from its position. until you type in a number. When you reach 2 characters (say a "11" then it sends focus to the first field in the form.

                As I said it is not pretty but it might give you some ideas. I have used comments in the form OnKey Event script, so you can follow what I tried to do.

                I am sure that there is a better way to do this and maybe Al will chime back in and set us straight.

                    Tom,
                    Al might be into the New Years cheer all ready.

                    Your code does not allow any control type keys or the zero digit.

                    Here is an alternative
                    Code:
                    IF topparent.active()="v_test" THEN 'is the variable the active field

                        If left(a_user.key.value,1) = "{" then ' allows the use of function and navigation etc keys
                            end
                        end if
                        If .not. isdigit(a_user.key.value) .or. len(v_test.text)>1 then
                            a_user.key.handled=.t.
                            end
                        end if

                    END IF

                      I knew there was an easier way to accomplish the onkey event -

                          Re: Controlling user input

                          Just an added note to what Tim posted

                          The original code allowed for function keys defined by alpha but not user defined functions keys. I modified Tim's code (hope you don't mind Tim) to allow for trapping user defined keys as in the sample code.

                          Code:
                          IF topparent.active()="V_test" THEN
                          	IF left(a_user.key.value,1) = "{" THEN ' allows the use of function and navigation etc keys
                          		goto funct_keys ' this allows not only Alpha function keys to be trapped but
                          						'user defined function keys also
                          		end
                          	END IF
                          	IF len(v_test.text)>1 THEN
                          		a_user.key.handled=.t.
                          		cancel()
                          		end
                          	END IF
                          	IF .not. isdigit(a_user.key.value) .or. len(v_test.text)>1 THEN
                          		a_user.key.handled=.t.
                          		cancel()
                          		end
                          	END IF

                          END IF

                          funct_keys: ' these are defined function keys other than those defined by Alpha

                          	if a_user.key.value="{F10}" then
                          	    a_user.key.handled=.t.
                          	    if a_user.key.event="down" then
