Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Item Lookup

    I need some help here.

I am looking for examples of how I can make a lookup smart. For example, lets use states, counties, and cities. What is the best way to set up a lookup so when you select a state it then gives you the counties of that state. Then after selecting the county, it gives you a selection of the cities in that county.

I am actually using it with different fields but I thought the simpliest way was to do it this way. I prefer, if possible, to do without coding it in XBasic.

    Anybody?

    Thanks.

I'll try to find you a link but in Alpha this is know as a progressive lookup.

    Here's the link.

      david,
sounds like a cascading progressive lookup to me (see link). I do not think there is an alternative to xbasic for this. Look at this file and see if it might be what you want. If you have the table with all the data, zip it and we can help you get it together.

        Re: Item Lookup

This sounds like just a filtered lookup will do. You can do this at the table level or at the form level.

At the table level see this help page. It uses a variable but you can also specify another field in the current table instead. You need to use the following format though: currentTableName->fieldname

At the form level you would use a series controls that provide a list of values. The second and subsequent controls would have a filter applied based on the previous control's choice. Most of these controls have a filter property that can be applied.

This help section is all about table lookups. Found strangely enough under Alpha Five User Guide - Table Lookups in the main help. The sample app referenced on those pages is missing some of the tables so see this post for a replacement.

The zipcode.dbf that Alpha had at one time has the zipcode, state, city, and county.

              Re: Item Lookup

Strangely enough, I still have that old Zipcode database but the table only has zipcode, city and state- no county.
If you have a lookup table with city, county and state fields and you want to use it as the lookup table in another table with the same fields, it seems to me that the simplest thing to do is to enter "city" first since it is the most specific locator. Make that field a simple table lookup and in the lookup field rules for "city" have the lookup automatically fill the county and state fields. Whoever enters the "city" would have to know what state it is in so the correct state could be selected from the lookup table if the automatic fill was incorrect. This would be even better if you had the zipcodes.
You could make the lookup table pop-up when entering "city".

Attached is the Zipcode file. It was given to me when I purchased I think ver 4.5 and It has the county, however the .doc file doesn't mention the counties. I know I didn't go in there and add them.

Anyway, anyone who needs this, it's yours. Just send a contribution

                  Re: Item Lookup

My zipcode database must be older than dirt. I don't think I got it with V4.5 and I no longer have the CD. I think I got it on floppy. Nonetheless, I tried downloading this .zip file and can't open it because it says the source stream is corrupted. I use jzip because I don't want to pay for winzip for vista. Any ideas. Perhaps you could e-mail it to me.

Csv to import. Will have to create your own indexes.

Robert, sorry, but I should have sent only the dbf file

Try this one. As Stan suggest in his CSV file you will
need to create your own indexes

I hate to belabor this in the forum but I've tried numerous times to download this and all I get is a 11Kb text file which has formating but no data. I'm using Free download manager which is usually pretty reliable. Do you have any suggestions on how to download the entire zip file?
