Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Printer not activated error code -41

    Hi All,

I looked and searched through all the threads and was not able to find an appropriate solution for the printing error. No matter what I do, whether trying to print, save as pdf (or other formats) or e-mail I get the same error message. It appears to try to "print" to the "Alpha Five Printer" and then fails, giving the error message "printer not activated, error code -41". When I close that I get a follow-up error message saying "Layout name: Payroll Report (the file name I chose) @ timetracking_set4.setLayout type: reportError communicating with printer". Does anyone have an idea why it keeps having this error. I've looked everywhere for an explanation of how the alpha five printer works but I haven't found anyway to resolve this.

    Thanks!

      Chris,
Make special note of the 9-01-2007 Similar Thread---Many make the mistake of trying to directly use the Alpha printer which will fail. Use your default or any other most likely and see what happens.

Thanks so much for responding. It's nice to feel that your not just posting these questions into a blackhole.. :-)

In response to the other threads. I've looked at them all and here is my response to each.

        http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=69355

"Error code 30 Printer not activated"

        1) I'm not trying to print to the "Alpha Five Printer". No matter what option I choose, whether to save as (pdf, text, etc.) It automatically selects the Alpha five and gives me the error message.

        2) I changed the report settings for the printers and tried a number of combinations setting it to the default and to each of the printers I had setup. If I set it up to a physical printer that I use and try to preview or print the report I get the error message "no printer configured" and no preview is loaded. In the end, in order to get it to do a preview I have to select "use default printer".

        3) there are recommedations to set different printers to different ports, but I've been unable to change any of that, and when I open the alpha five printer properties I get a message that it's not activated. I see there is a screen to enter a license and activation, but of course I don't have those. Do you think that's what it's asking me for?

MikeC, the one you recommeded looking at:

        http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=68991

Printer not activated, error code -41

        1) "Make sure that the Printer Spooler is running in services. I usually set it up to start automatically. Often it is defaulted to Manual."

        a) I don't know what the printer spooler is or how to change that.

        2) "Thanks Clive.
Unfortunately I had the Print Spooler Service running.
        But I have found a workaround !!
I have purchased the Amyuni Document Converter then I entered The Licence code into my "Alpha Five Printer""

        b) like I said above, I almost feel like it wants me to enter an activation code, but I'm not cool with that.

        3) Again, I'm not trying to print to the alpha five printer...I'm trying to do everything but that.

I could probably discuss all of the other threads and explain how they don't appear to apply to my problem, but I am sincere that I've searched pretty thoroughly for a solution and come up empty handed.

Please, if someone has some ideas, or perhaps some knowledge of how it's supposed to work and I can figure out what is going on.

Thanks again, and I truly am thankful for the quick responses.

        Chris

          Morning Chris,
Another possible I have read about here on the messageboard (I have never had this problem personally) is to reinstall the Amyuni printer -- this is the driver used for pdf -- by doubleclicking on the InstallAmyuniPrinters.exe file in the install directory. As you have stated you also have problems with other formats this might not be the cause--the printer spooler could be--is the spooler listed in your task manager??

If for some reason this cannot be resolved and because you are using QReportBuilder, you may want to come the currently free Thursday webinar and maybe we can help in a more direct way. Click on my signature link below for more information.

Yeah, I was looking at the weekly webinar meetings. I do what to check those out. I hit the ground running this weekend and made a few reports, and I see there is a lot of potential. If I can just get through this one pesky issue, the ROI on buying this software will be should be pretty good. :-)

I'll give reinstalling the drivers a go and see if that helps.

            Thanks,

            Chris

actually, before I do that. I would like to explore the printer spooler issue...

"the spooler listed in your task manager??"

--- Where (or what?) is the task manager?

(Sorry, perhaps a silly question, lol)

Task manager is a Windows interface--assuming you are using Window operating system. Use Control+Alt+Delete all at once is one way to bring it up. My spooler currently is called spoolersv

                    Hey Mike,

another quick dumb question. You mentioned the "install directory". where can I find the install directory?

                    Thanks,

                      Chris,
I am referring to where you have QReportBuilder installed. The easiest way is to right click on whatever icon you are using to load QReportBuilder (whether in the Start Menu or on your Desktop), choose Properties, then choose Find Target. That will bring you to your install directory.

Re: Printer not activated error code -41

OK, so I installed the amyuni printers, and now I have another printer in my printers & faxes besides the alpha five printer. When I go to reports properties and look at printers. It's set to use default printer but amyuni document converter is now the one in the grayed out box. I tried saving the file as a couple different formats and got the same error message. I tried specifying the Amyuni document converter and got the same error message.

It still is trying to use the alpha five printer.

On a related matter. One of the reports I set up is using parameters that are set when the report is run, and the report tries to run the parameters right before it prints. Another one does not have parameters. For the one with no parameters I am able to print the report to a physical printer by specifying the printer. For the one with parameters, even if I change in printer settings to a different printer it still tries use the alpha five printer.

This alpha five printer is a stubborn fella'.

Basically the alpha five is the de facto default method, but the program seems incapable of communicating with it, because it is "not activated".

                          Chris,
I have not had these problems as others have...maybe due to my just having my single printer being the one I have selected as default for all programs. When Alpha prints, whether it is pdf, text, or whatever, I do not choose a different printer and have not had problems. Are you trying to specify a different printer than the normal default one you use for everything else? I do not believe you actually choose the Amyuni or the Alpha printer ever--they are used behind the scenes I seem to recall.

                          Out of ideas again! :)

I have a physical printer set as my default in windows. Sometimes when I try to print to that printer the alpha five tries to override it.

The main issue isn't with printing of course, it's with saving files. and the alpha five printer is preventing that.

Now that I have the amyuni document converter setup, can I delete the alpha five printer now?

in properties they both are identified as:

                            Amyuni Document Converter 2.51
                            Amyuni Document Converter 2.51

I think that is the best solution at this point. I can't do it from printers and faxes because "access is denied". Is there another way?

OK, I believed I solved it. Simple solution of logging in as an administrator and deleting alpha five printer from the printer and faxes. I then loaded Qreportsbuilder and tried to save a file as a pdf.

It tells you that the PDF conversion drivers are not installed and prompts you to install them. click ok, it installs them and poof, it works.

Just leaving this as a record to anyone who encounters the same problem.

Thanks to MikeC for all the help.
