Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Layout variable vcSearchby overrides shared variable

I am learning Alpha 5 using the Alphasports database.

In re-creating the Alphasports Customer Information Form, every time I wish to save the form, the following message comes up:

Layout variable vcSearchby overrides a shared variable of the same name. Do you wish to save the form anyway.

Could anyone point me in the right direction so this error message does not come up?

    Many thanks.

Not a clue what "re-creating the Alphasports Customer Information Form" might mean.

The vcSearchBy variable is defined using the Form menu, Variables choice.

It is further referenced in the oninit event for the Customer Information form.
    There can be only one.

Re: Layout variable vcSearchby overrides shared variable

Re-creating - in the sense that I am using most of the features of the Alphasports Customer Information Form on my newly created Client form. I am including the search facility: by Lastname and by Letter.

In the Alphasports Customer information Form, the variable vcSearchby is used in both the Searchby box Onchange, and in the multi-state button Oninit.

I have simply copied (recreated) these two features as part of my Client info screen, and when I save the form, I receive the previously mentioned error message.

      Hope this is clearer.

Re: Layout variable vcSearchby overrides shared variable

Copying the objects to your form does not copy the variable definition as I mentioned and it does not copy the oninit code used to manipulate the objects.
        There can be only one.

Sorry Stan. I have not made this clear.

I have created the objects and created the OnInit and Onchange codes. I did not copy them.

If this helps, I have attached a zipped version of the small database.
To obtain the error message I receive:

Open the Form FrmClient in design view.
Right click the Multi-State Button - Events - Onchange
Make a change to, say the text in say, line 23.
          Save code.
          Save form.

I must admit, the message is intermittent and does not always come up.

Anyway, If you have the time to look at this, I would be very grateful.

Note the difference in where/how the variables are defined in your sample vs AlphaSports.

Yours are defined for the layout, not the session. The oninit script dims the same variable as shared (session) and thus the conflict.

            Code:
            dim shared vcSearchby as c
            vcSearchby = "Lastname"
            There can be only one.

Wow. That would have taken me ages to find.

Many thanks for taking the time.

I have placed the variables into the session tab, but it won;t let me delete the Layout variables on exiting and saving. Would that matter or should I start again with the variables?

Re: Layout variable vcSearchby overrides shared variable

It won't let you delete them because you have objects on the form which rely on them. Change the objects to reference the shared variables and you should be able to then delete the layout variables.

                  Stan,
I have duplicated the FRmClient as a test, deleted the objects, in fact, only leaving the text fields, and it still says that the variables will be kept.

I guess that I am looking at this the wrong way.

Re: Layout variable vcSearchby overrides shared variable

                    I probably didn't explain it fully/correctly.

Define the variables on the session tab, remove them from the layout tab, and you should then have the objects changed to reference the session variables.

                      Stan,

Thank you very much indeed for following this through for me. Very much appreciated.

                      All working fine now.
