Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using outlook for Email

    I read so many threads about this but still confused.
    I have the email settings on A5 to use the default outlook for Email, if I try to Email_send to GMAIL or COMCAST, I get the rror:

    Error sending message
    550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [email protected]

    So I ask my Exchange server guy, he says use MAPI to send so it uses outlook for outgoing.... I thought that settings in A5 uses outlook ?????

    Is there anything I need to setup A5 to, in order to send and not to have that relay error message ?
    Thanks

    Re: Using outlook for Email

    It may be that your mail server is getting in the way. I'm not using one so this may not be of help. I've put the following code on a button on a form. I got all this from the A5 help files... and it works quite well.

    body = <<%a%
    Just wanted to let you know that we really enjoy using Alpha Five.
    %a%
    email_send("[email protected]","Thanks",body,"","","",.T.) 'use settings in A5 Email profile

    email_client_external("[email protected]","foo", "Test") 'use default Mapi client - opens Outlook

    'the following uses the default installed Mapi smtp account to send an email, without opening the installed email client.
    DIM ps as P
    DIM pm as P
    pm.from = "[email protected]"
    pm.from_alias = Your Name"
    pm.to = "nameto/@hotmail.com"
    pm.cc = ""
    pm.bcc = ""
    pm.subject = "This is a test"
    pm.message = "This is the body of the message"
    pm.html_message = "<HTML>HTML Body goes here</HTML>"
    'pm.attachments = <<%str%
    'C:\dev\test.zip
    'C:\my documents\report.zip
    '%str%
    'optional header fields
    'pm.xmailer = "Alpha Mailer"
    'pm.lRelated = .F.
    ' send message
    IF email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.broadband.rogers.com",25,"smtp username,"password")
    email_smtp_send(pm, ps, .t.)
    END IF
    Email_smtp_close(ps)

        On the A5 main menu... View, Settings, Email. There's a dropdown box at the bottom of this form, under the tab control, where you can set this.

          Hi Anis,

          Is your Outlook set up to be POP3 or does it go through a Outlook server situation?

          Is it Office Outlook, or Outlook Express?

            No, unfortunately it's setup as a server (smtp), and it's office outlook not express.

              Anis,

              With the information, and what I see, I would think Eagle should/could help you out.

              Your MAPI settings look correct in Alpha.............As long as Outlook pops up when you want to send your email, the MAPI function works.

              Sounds like Eagle might have some restrictions at their end.

                Re: Using outlook for Email

                Eagles actually uses SMTP, which will not relay.
                I'm trying to use MAPI to avoid any relay issues.

                  Re: Using outlook for Email

                  Hey Anis,

                  I could be wrong,

                  MAPI is a messaging architecture that enables multiple applications to interact with multiple messaging systems seamlessly across a variety of hardware platforms.

                  I think in the case of MAPI here, is, it lets Outlook talk with Alpha, instead of using the internal Alpha email client.

                  In regards to the relay problem, you got me there. I still think it would be a function of your email provider, or a setting in the email function somewhere.

                    Re: Using outlook for Email

                    I agree. That's why we don't allow relay because of security reasons.

                      Re: Using outlook for Email

                      This is from the A5 Help file...

                      MAPI Email

                      MAPI is only necessary if you want to send email using Alpha Five via your "external" email client, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Thunderbird. If, however, you wish to send email using Alpha Five's built-in email functionality, then this is not a problem for you. MAPI is not required. Simply define your email settings in View > Settings > Email, and use EMAIL_SEND(), EMAIL_SEND2(), or any of the other email functions (except EMAIL_CLIENT_EXTERNAL() ) to send your email.

                      The MAPI DLL built into Windows is just a placeholder that does nothing and cannot be accessed until there is a MAPI compliant email client installed to replace the DLL. Installing Outlook or aqnother MAPI compliant email client should install the MAPI DLL on your computer. Windows 2003 does not install any email software by default, while other versions of Windows have Outlook Express as part of the default installation.

                      Will the Email_SMTP_Send function work with your server?

                        Re: Using outlook for Email

                        I defined the profile to use Alpha5 email client and I used Email_smtp, neither one works to send out to GMAIL or COMCAST accounts for example because of relay issue.
                        I only can email to our company's contacts.

                          I guess you don't want Outlook popping up so email_client_external won't be much good to you. Since your email server won't let stuff through I can't think of anything else... not too up on this stuff on email servers.
