Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    i18n multilanguage webapps

I'm new to Alpha5 and want to create multilanguage webapps eg dutch & french. What would the best way be to do this besides creating 2 versions which is not maintainable ? Thx

    Hi Frank,

Very simply you will need a page for each language.

Most sites with multi languages have flags of each country for the user to click on to show the text in the selected language.

Or, same A5W pages but put all of your content (text, etc) in the database. Display it on the A5W page using code that filters the record by selected language. For instance,

rather than typing "Hello". Use a table with this structure and extract the correct language for a given phrase.

      Table Name is CONTENT
      ID
      Language - Eg,Gr, Fr, etc.
Phrase - the key like Greeting, WelcomeNote, WarningNotice, or just Phrase1, Phrase2, etc.
Content - the actual content in the appropriate language.

Index it on Language+Phrase, so an index key might be EgGreeting.

So if you wanted to place a Greeting phrase, you would use this expression:

      lookupc("F",session.language+"Greeting","content","content","languagephrase")

Note - if your text is long, you need to use table.external_record_content_get() instead of lookupc() which maxs out at 1024 characters.

Get the desired language into the session.language using a dialog or hyperlink. Default it to something when they first get to the website.

For management, the table above can be the MANY side of two other tables - LANGUAGE and PHRASE. So you could see all the Phrases for a given language, or all the Languages for a given Phrase.

        Re: i8n multilanguage webapps

        Steve,

Thx for your extensive input. How would you handle text in bubble help ? Does A5 have something like macro substitution like we used to have in clipper with the '&' prefix before a variable ? Hope you get what I mean

          Re: i8n multilanguage webapps

I wrote several utilities with Clipper5 that used macro substitution, but I don't think it applies here. The bubble help is built in to the model, one entry per field. You would have to modify the contents of the bubble help at page runtime. If search for UPLOAD and STRITRAN you will find examples. But it would be a real pain for the multiple fields you wanted to provide help.

A better way is to look at some of the free javascript bubble help systems. You would use what I described in the last post to pre-post content to a what would be a javascript popup or rollover message box. Then place an HELP type icon next to the fields you want to provide help for. You could probably use this same method to apply the rollover to the bubble help. That would take some investigation.

With this method, your page has to render all of the help text even if it is never used. An even better method is to use AJAX to retrieve help from a table at request time.

But all of these options require you to build a complete help system outside of what is provided.

I'll tell you the way I do it, but one help text per page. I have a table like above (just one language) and I reference the help text, place it somewhere on my page, using:

          ?table.external_record_content_get("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\web_help","content","","Page="+quote(a5_split_url(request.script_name).page))

          See attached image.
