Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    add user id to grid

I have a grid that will be used for an employee to enter their work time. It displays 15 rows that includes date and time in, date and time out and an authorization code. They may enter as many rows as needed and then hit the submit button.

Their userid is captured at the login process and saved in a variable called session.vUserid.
How can I make that a calculated field, so that the userid will be saved in a field in each record?

    Thanks,
    mike

Mike unsure why you wish to make this a calc field?
My answer would be to retrieve the User's Guid and use this instead of the id,
    - Then make a hidden field/column for the Guid or Id
    - next on Initialize assign the session.variable in question, to the Field via the standard CurrentForm.Controls.whatever methedology.

Re: add user id to grid

I can certainly use the guid, but when someone looks at the record to see who (by that I mean the name of the logged in user) added the record we need a name of the logged in person. That aside, though, I still don't understand how to add the guid, name or whatever to each record. I know how to do it in a dialog or single entry, but I don't know how to do it a multi-row grid (see the attached image.) The user can add many rows of data and click the submit button. I don't know where or how to add code to add the name of the logged on user to each record. Granted I could add a field to the display and have the user enter it, but that's not what we need.

      Thanks,
      mike

Re: add user id to grid

If you already have the userid at the time they enter their record in the grid, then you need only to use the Grid Events to apply that value at the time they enter the record.

In the BeforeValidateNewRecords, add something like this inside the WITH clause:

        DataSubmitted.userid = session.vUserid

userid needs to be in the Grid as an editable field, but you can select field type Hidden + Hide Row to hide the value.

Re: add user id to grid

A few other thoughts on your questions.

You probably have an employee table with an id, say em_id, and the employee name, em_name (or first and last), so if you make the ulink value in security equal to em_id, and save that value in session.__protected__userid, then a couple good things happen.

First, the protected session variable can only be changed with Xbasic, so another employee cannot change the variable and enter records for another employee.

Second, if you make the employee id field hidden as Steve and Colin suggested, then you can create a calculated field that is a simple lookupc() to the employee table to get the name and display that in your grid as a label. The name doesn't need to be saved. That way, the name cannot be changed, either.

Then, you can use the employee id in a search if you need to edit or review the records.
