Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can you update individual tables in a set form using two or more tables

I have created a form using a set (one to many) combining two tables. One table is called production and the other is called delays. I'm using two pages, one labeled "Production", the other "Delays". I need to be able to save the pages individually. The production table is cyclable. Each field is filled in once per cycle. In the Delays table there is a lookup field with 4 different choices. Once the choice is made and the other fields, start of delay and end of delay, are filled in the table needs to be saved while data the table "Production" may not yet have all the data needed to complete it's cycle.

Hopefully this is understandable. I'm new to this and learning slowly on my own. Alpha 5 v9 is a phenomenal package and a little intimidating at the moment. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely,
    D.J. Briley

    Sorry DJ,
This is not completely understandable to me. What is a "page". This is not a standard terminology that I am able to decipher.

I'm not certain I got the concept of what you were explaining, however, it seems to me what you are saying is that the parent table record is not complete before you are adding a child record. You can only add a child record to an existing committed (saved) parent record that has a value in the linking field. So you could add some values to a parent record, which would have to include value for the linking field, save the parent record, which makes a child record available to be started and work through adding more data to the parent record and the child record as "change" event.

    Is this anywhere close?

Not easily. Set based forms work best if you complete and save the parent (primary) table data entry before beginning data entry into the related child table records. If you do the data entry out of this "natural" sequence there's a significant risk your child table records will be linked to the wrong parent.

        Mike,
I started with a blank form. In the toolbox, I clicked on "Tabbed Object" and drug that onto the blank form. This, by default, placed three tabbed object onto my blank form. The tabbed objects were labeled Page 1, Page 2 and Page 3. On the DragDrop List, I placed on Page 1, which I renamed "Production", all fields from the "dailys" table.
I deleted Page 3 of the tabbed objects and renamed Page 2, calling it "Delays". I then placed all fields from the "delays" table. I was hoping to save each page, Production and Delays seperately. No matter what tabbed object I was in, wheter it be Production or Delays, when I saved it, it saved both tables at once.

Hopefully this is a little clearer.

Thanks for responding to my post. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any of the tabs of the tabbed object is merely a way to view part of the set "composite" record. Save one, save all.
          There can be only one.

            Stan,
Thanks. Now I know. I purchased the A5v9 basic version. Could this be done in the premium version where I could create an application that could display both tables where the data input into each table could be saved seperately?

              DJ,

It has nothing to do w. "premium version". You can't do what you want the way you want. If you have a set, you can save the parent and then add the child data and save that. Probably if we understood what you are really after, we could suggest a way to do it. I know it doesn't seem like it to you, but what you are doing is putting the cart before the horse.

DJ, I agree with Peter. It's possible to arrange a data entry sequence such as you describe using multiple forms and custom scripts or xdialogs. However, you will be working very hard, and, unnecessarily. Spend more time working through the tutorials, and explore the AlphaSports sample before you decide to abandon all the work that Alpha has already done for you to make data entry sequences easy. My advice: adapt your design to the tools Alpha already provides, rather than try to build your own.

I think I know what you are up to.
Suggest you create a Set with the two tables linked 1:many

Create a new Form for each Table (Don't use a Tabbed Object. I use them a lot but probably not suitable here)

Create a new Form for the Set and add the forms for each table. You will then be able to add the information separately.

                    Ted,

Thanks for the response. Please excuse my lack of knowledge. I'm learning as I go. I've already created a Set with the two tables I'm working with. This is a one to many Set.

I can create a new form for each table in this Set. I 'm not clear on your last paragraph stating "Create a new Form for the Set and add the forms for each table". How do I pull the two forms into this Form for the Set?

                    D.J.

Read what Stan has pointed you to.
Personally I like Sub Forms, and use one for each table.
You might want to turn off Referential integrity in the set builder.

I'm off client site Thursday, so if you need an example, just ask.

Unrelated to this thread but attachment is an illustration of calculating previous 12 months total as you messaged. One calculated field in the table I created, otherwise meets your specification. One calculated field on the form for the total.
