Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error after deleting record

I have a web based app, have all of the latest updates. I have a browse page that goes to a detailed view via a link on a spceific field, wty #. After I delete a record, I have to pack the table before I can save or delete another record. Other wise I get an error, usually a DNS error. There is no special code, no security in the browse page, and the index that I am using is the field which I am using for the detailed view link.

Any ideas how to correct this problem?

    Quick check of something,
Do you always succesfully CLOSE your table after the operation
eg tblpointer.close() ,,, and are you signalling tblpointer.change.end() if necessary
Also are you using the correct Flags for access of your table
    eg ? FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE || FILE_RW_SHARED
    //
    just easy things to forget.

I haven't opened or closed them specifically, because I was under the impression that the forms did this all automatically.

Where would I put the code to close the table (and I assume to reopen it) after a delete?

        AH -- ouch !!
Since you have been recieving such error
I assumed that you were using your own code,
Now I'm slightly lost as I guess you must be using the/a Grid Component 100%
        from your last post.
From what I have seen their boiler plate code is near bulletproof in such matters.
Of all the times I have had to either Pack dbfs or Reindex them, it has always been due to my own sloppy management or code.
        ---
Does the file need to Packed everytime, or will just reindexing eg "Update Indexes" solve your problem ?
Also is your Grid based on a Table or on a View ?

Handy to remember also check that all the Tables/ Field rules are OK for what you are doing. (Sometimes some of the rules seem to stick with tables made for the desktop, and then interfere with Web Applications.

It has to be packed just about every time after a record is deleted. Interestingly, this just started happening in the last day or so or I just now noticed it. Additionally, I have other tables that I can delete to my heart's content. And when I delete a record in the main table (the one I am having problems with) and then delete one or two records in another table, I can come back to the main table and delete a second record, no problem.

            Re: Error after deleting record

I believe I have found a bug in the WAS. The form I was using has about 80 different fields. I created a new form that exactly mimicked the form I was having problems with. I put only about 12 fields in the update (detail) view and was able to delete two records in a row. I increased the number of fields until I got about half way through the total number of fields. No problem. But when I got to a certain number of fields, I started having the DNS problem again. To ensure that was not not the fields themselves, I removed the bottom most 4 fields in the detail view. Deleted two records, everything is fine. I added four other fields from another part of the table and deleted two records. Got an error on the second record. Tried it again with four other fields (removing the previous four) in the detail view and on the second delete operation I got this message:

            500 Internal Server Error
            "Script Error
            Error:Script: /LivePreview/Component1_LivePreview.a5w line:1962
x_out = a5w_run_Component(tmpl) 'SYSTEM GENERATED COMMENT - PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE
            Property not found
            pu.pk.r10 subelement not found."

This is a straight form with absolutely no special coding or security or anything else.

So is this test using the LivePreview or an actual published page?

Since I don't use the LivePreview option that often, it may be a bug in that code.

I'd test with a published page, just like an enduser is going to use. That's the one that I want to be sure works properly.

This is with Live Preview, but so far Live Preview has behaved identically to the application server. I do plan to test it on the local host, and if the problem is duplicated, move on to the deployment server. I will keep you posted (pun intended).

                  Re: Error after deleting record

It sounds like something might be wrong with your table structure.
I learnt a long long time ago not to allow users to delete records.
I normally fool them into just maring a record for deletion.
Then when I do maintenance, I copy all the marked records to a storage table, and then delete the marked records as another batch operation.
naturally all marked records are filtered from the users view.
This may work as a work around for you.
As to the Bug maybe the tables URL being processed is too long, due to the number of fields involved,

                    Re: Error after deleting record

The table structure has not changed for some time and none of the other pages dealing with this table behave abnormally. I don't think it is the URL because I am able to delete a record and if I pack the table after each delete I can delete as many records as I want.

I have changed the structure of the page so that there is a separate page for deleting records and I display only a few fields. That appears to work fine.

Thanks to everyone for all their help.
