Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    The handle is invalid

    Alpha 5 v9 - I'm getting the message

Script Create Web Pages line 482 htm_pointer.write_line("tr class=dataroweven>")

    The handle is invalid

    when running the following:

    :
    :
    :
    473 htm_pointer.write_line("<tr class=datarowodd>")
    474 htm_pointer.write_line("<td>" + web_academic_year + "</td>")
    475 htm_pointer.write_line("<td>" + web_academic_term + "</td>")
    476 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_attainment_css + ">" + web_attainment + "</td>")
    477 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_attitude_css + ">" + web_attitude + "</td>")
    478 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_progress_css + ">" + web_progress + "</td>")
    479 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_attendance_css + ">" + web_attendance +"</td>")
    480 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_behaviour_css + ">" + web_behaviour + "</td>")
    481 htm_pointer.write_line("</tr>")
    482 htm_pointer.write_line("<tr class=dataroweven>")
    483 htm_pointer.write_line("<td>" + web_academic_year + "</td>")
    484 htm_pointer.write_line("<td>" + web_academic_term + "</td>")
    485 htm_pointer.write_line("<td class=" + web_attainment_css + ">" + web_attainment + "</td>")
    :
    :
    :
I've numbered the lines to correspond with the real script (called Create Web Pages).

It happens every time the script is run.

htm_pointer is DIMmed as P and the file has been opened OK. As far as I can tell all the variables have been DIMMed and contain valid data.

    Any ideas please?

Might post in the Application Server area instead of the Desktop.

      <<htm_pointer.write_line("<tr class=dataroweven>")>>

If dataroweven is a variable, shouldn't it be

      Code:
      htm_pointer.write_line("<tr class=" + dataroweven + ">")

        Thanks for responding.

dataroweven isn't a variable, its a string literal. The line should be correct as shown. Variables are those which are outside quotes and concantenated to a literal with a +.

This part of the code is within a loop reading about 450 records from a table and generating a static web page for each record. The problem appears to occur after a number of pages have been generated but not always the same number. The A5v9 PC is running XP Pro SP2 and the database is on a shared disk on a server running Windows Server 2003. It was originally thought it might be a cacheing or connectivity issue but that wouldn't explain why it always happens at the same line of code. I have tried commenting out that line and then it happens at the next line so it's not a syntax issue. Memory?

To Stan Matthews - it's not using the application server. This is static web page HTML being generated from a script in desktop A5v9.

            Re: The handle is invalid

How many "htm_pointer.write_line()" statements do you run thru for each record? Very interesting to hear it always bombs out on the same line but yet it happens for different records.

When you look at the file after the error message did it get the previous line written, the statement prior to line 482?

I would start off with assuming that you are maxing some internal control out with too many write_line() commands. Though I am not sure why that would be, just a guestimate.

Instead of writing each line individually, store the data in a variable, then after processing the record, write the variable out to the file.

I do something similar to create xml files except that I do all the string concatenation within the variable space and then create the file with a single

                Code:
                save_to_file(varname,filename)
command, rather than writing each line to the file as a separate action. I'm not sure if it would make a difference but it might be worth a try. It allows me to check the xml in a msg box during debugging before committing the values.
