Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

The lookup field does not return the data.

I have lookup field that will launch the grid with the right data.
after finding the right record, pressing SELECT, does not do anything.

Is there any other places to indicated what to fill.

It works well in the desktop area. I know that in the web is another horse.

Hi Mike, I had issues with this in A5v8. I solved it in v8 by putting the full A5v8 program on the server, and left the A5v8 program up running the client's application with the WAS turned on.

I hope this isn't an issue with v9 but time will tell!

Re: The lookup field not working with sample web app.

I believe to be missing a few basic principles in web design.
I am attaching a sample. This sample was presented before to select the right pictures from a browse. Now is perfect in the desktop version.
It looks like the same issue is now in the web project.

        Objective:
Two choice fields are filled by the user and the result of those 2 fields are to be combined to fill either pictgrp or pictgrptxt fields. Either one these 2 fields are used to link to a browse, displaying only matching records to choose the right record.

        4 issues are here.

        A) I cannot add the values from the picturegroup and pictureclass fields to either pictgrp or pictgrptxt. In the desktop the calculations work, not in the web side.
Where is this calculation done here in the web side?

        B) I am able to show the grid with the pictures, but even when I fill manually pictgrp or pictgrptxt fields, the picturegrid shows all the pictures records. and after select it does return one of the values wanted. (I need the pictureviw to be updated. which is the 3rd issue)
Where do I tell the grid to only show the matching records?

        C) In the lookup definition/map The choices to update does not include the pictureview field. So as result after "SELECT" it only brings the mapped field mapped.
How to add to the map choices the jpg field to be included during updating?

D: How to start the input in a blank record, not showing the prior entries?
Just like in the desktop, we have a choice to show 1st record or go to data entry with no records shown.

Sorry for such long request, But I am stuck. Help, Help

Re: The lookup field does not return the data.

          Ok Starting at the top;
          Objective:
Two choice fields are filled by the user and the result of those 2 fields are to be combined to fill either pictgrp or pictgrptxt fields. Either one these 2 fields are used to link to a browse, displaying only matching records to choose the right record.
Lets look at how the A5 server works
Both your page.a5w and component.a5wcmp are parsed/interpreted-converted - into HTML-CSS and some javascript at the Server this is then sent normally via HTTP to the users/client Browser.
Thus any calculations of fields by the server need to be done prior to being sent to the user.
So the approaches you can take are
          1. Have the user enter the PictGroup and the PictClass (in probably a dialog) and then take these values as session.Vars to the next page with a grid or anothe dialog.
          2. Learn how to do this by adding javascript and AJAX handlers so you can stay on the same page.
          3. Maybe, this should work although I have never used it, make use of the grids built in search component, to search on PictGroup and PictClass
          --
Thus at the moment your calculated fields are calculating the null values of when you load the component and I can't see how they have any possibility of updateing.

As a basic design rule I have found it best not too make one grid that is meant to do everything.
eg 1 A grid or Dialog for creating new Records
2 A Grid for modifying records
3 A grid for deleting records
          4. A grid for searching Records
This might just be my personal preference, but it works for me

Re: The lookup field does not return the data.

Colin I was realizing what you are saying. I just spoke earlier with Steve Woods and he gave the disappointing news about calculating fields in web design.
I am going to rethink that page.
            Thanks.
I have learned that with a dialogue I could get the combined equivalent values of the picturegroup and pictureclass into pictgrp.
I will read in how to transpose those values into a grid to be manipulated.
I am going to break the process into 2 or 3 pages to arrive to the final for printing.
Let me go downstairs and make a big pot of that black stuff. I going to need it tonight.
In the mean time if any one has other ideas, please keep it coming.

Re: The lookup field does not return the data.

About a year ago I moved from doing A5 Desktop to Web apps,
              { in short Mike, it is more difficult due to a number of factors. }
But everything is possible just with an added level of difficulty.
I believe there is a possibility that adding two fields together may be easy in Alpha Version 10 with its rumoured AJAX ability.
Thus soon what you can do on the desktop you may soon be able to replicate on the Web.

Is there a code to do it?
I can bring every thing upon select/submit. except for the image selected in the grid.
can an image reference field be the way?
I try to load image reference field from the grid, but it did not work.
Even if only gets stored, upon moving to a next page it could display the full record loaded.
Is this an option? if so, how to add the image to the record?

Re: The lookup field does not return the data.

Mike due to the way AJAX works and also my lack of knowledge, I can' say exactly how you should achieve this. Also I'm not 100% sure what you are trying to achieve.
The good news is that just Yesterday, I used AJAX to update a an image from an ImageRef field.
There was a problem in doing this though the "\" or "\\" dont transmit very well from Ajax page into the javascript Call. So what I did simply was to parse out the filename sent it via ajax and then added in on the jaascript side the static type file folder address via a "http:\\www... method.
Now I have a list box in a dialog that when the user moves to a new selection calls back an associated Image.
                  So yes it is possibble.
If you wish roll up a small template project illustrating what trickery you wish done zip it up, and I'll insert the AJAX as required. Then you can copy reuse in your project what you require.

Here is attached a sample of the objective.
It needs upon selecting the grid picture to return it to the index form.
Not just the name but the picture as well.
I will appreciate to solve it.

Re: The lookup field does not return the data.

I'm positive you can not "bring back" the image reference field using a lookup. The image fields won't even be available in the lookup model for you to select. Images are not "in" the grid, they are graphic files on the drive and the image ref field just holds a path and filename.

You CAN bring back an Image Fieldname as a normal character field, say "c:\photos\image1001.jpg" in to a normal character field using the lookup. Then you can use that image path and filename to show your image when you save the grid record by pressing submit. Nothing will happen with the image until you press submit. All of this stuff you are asking about requires Javascript because you want to make changes to your screen without going to the server (pressing the submit button).

You CAN also use AJAX to make this happen. I really don't know if you can on a Grid, but I'm positive you can do it on a Dialog or A5W page using an Ajax callback. You'd have to research that, I have not tried it with an image (I do need to for a project and did some research on refreshing images using AJAX).

But honestly, all programmers abandon what they think are great ideas at the moment when they become unsupportable; and its good to know when to find another acceptable model and recognize that the client probably won't care either way. I'm happiest when I work within the limitations of Alpha, and pushing the envelope when I can have a little fun.

                              Mike I'm slightly confused,
You are getting a picture back as the pic below shows,
Since you are using the search feature of the feature of the grid component, you will getting or posting data every time a user clicks on the search.
This is great but makes an AJAX type solution somewhat redundant,
                              - If you were wishing to display just one image, then maybe the best method is via simply using the Detail view. The problem here is after a search you may now have a variety of furniture-Classes-conditions returned , so which one do you wish to display?
