Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Many to Many Relationships

    Hi,

I am about to write a new application which requires many to many relationships. Heres my situation...

I have 100,000 assets, which have documents linked to them. Initially, i would create a link field in each asset record and link the relevant document. However, if i have multiple documents linked to each asset, would it be reccomended to add the document numbers in the link field and seperate each document by a comma or is their a better way to achieve this.

During the lifetime of each asset, documents may be added or deleted. A single document will be used across multiple assets.

So one asset, many documents. Is there a more efficient way to achive this without having to have one field with multiple enteries, sepearted by a comma?

Any guidance on this one will be greatly appreciated.

    Denis

    Re: Many to Many Relationships

This subject has been covered before and there are probably similar threads at the bottom of this forum page.

Basically for a many to many relationship in A5 you will need an asset id field in your asset table, a document id field in your document table. Then create a third or "middle table" that will just contain the asset id and the document id. This table will form the basis of your many to many relationship.

    Have Fun,
    Dan

      Re: Many to Many Relationships

      Hi Dan,

Thanks for the advise on this one. Would the tables link up in a set as follows?

      TABLE 1
      ------------
      AssetID
      Asset_Name

      TABLE 2
      ------------
      DocID
      Document_Name

      TABLE 3
      ------------
      AssetID
      DocID

My question is on the best way to set up the links. Would you set this up within a set or another way?

My first stab would be via a set...

      table1->assetid (>) table3->assetid (>) table3->docid (>) table2->docid

Then, how would i display the data within a gridlinker?

      What do you think?

      Regards,

      Denis

        Re: Many to Many Relationships

You have it set up for one display. To display it the other way, keep the middle table (table 3) where it is and reverse the outer two tables.

Although with a grid linker you don't need to create the sets in the control panel, unless you need to see a visual representation. You build your set in the gridlinker. Naturally you will need to create your components first based on the tables.

          Dan,

Thank you for the time you have spent on this one.

If i create a gridlinker and add the necessary grids, how would i avoid displaying the table 3 grid as the selection grid. I need to display all the relevant link results and not have to select them from the table 3 grid in-order to view it.

          I hope that makes sense.

            Hi,

If anyone can help me with this problem, it would be fantastic.

I am trying to created many to many relationships and display the details within a gridlinker. The main problems is with the links table, i do not want the user to view this and also when using a gridlinker, I need all the link documents listed together rather than individually.

I have attached a diagram to help explain my dilemma.

            Thanks in advance,

            Denis

              Hi Again,

              I have scanned the entire forum using;

              Many to Many Gridlinker site:alphasoftware.com

But unfortunately, did not reveal any answers to my question.

Can someone please put me out of my misery and tell me if what i am asking is achieveable.

              Thanks Thanks Thanks,

                Hi Denis,

Not only can it be done, but I have given you an example. Unzip the attached file into a separate directory, and you will be able to see what I have done.

                Enjoy!

                  Dan,

I cannot thank you enough. Not only have you achieved what I need, but you have also shown me a new way of constructing a grid.

I really appreciate your help on this problem.

                  Thanks again.
