Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WebPage Database Help

Hello. I am new to Alpha Five and was hoping for some assistance in creating a database for a webpage. I have never created a database on a webpage before but the design is very simple with less than 10 fields. What I would like to do is create the database, link the webpage with fillable fields to the database. Simple. I do not want the person using the webpage to fill in the fields to have access to the database, the database will only be viewed at the server. No outside viewing of the data will be permitted. There will also be a link once the data is filled in to a Paypal account. Thanks

    Hi Jeffrey,

First things first. Open the Web demo that comes with Alpha and go through all the samples of how and what can be done with data and web pages.

Then you will be able to pick out what you want and how to use it.

With regard to linking to a Paypal account, Paypal will help you with that.

      Jeff,

A couple of things to consider for the database.
In the control panel click on new and create the fields you want and the
size. The first field make ID and Numeric 10 digits make it an auto increment field and index on the field.
      then create your other fields.

The you go to the web control panel click on web components, new component, type grid. You make the grid as you want to have the information viewed in the order and design it for add only and the data will fill the database.

Then design a A5W web page and place the component on it and you are ready to go with entering data on that page, need to publish etc...

I would add security to it as well.

You then can design another grid with all fields to review and with the security set only those with security rights can see.

If I can add just a little. I suggest the ID should be character, not numeric. Everything on the web is character, so if you have a primary field as numeric, it causes you to jump through some hoops on the web. If you do make it char, be sure to provide a default value that fills your field, e.g. if your field is length 5, your default might be "10000".

PayPal can be easy if you have just a few products and use their system to create buttons. But it can be quite complex if your needs are beyond that.
