Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sending email with Excel report

If you have a report and want to send it to an email recipient as an Excel file, it's nice because it retains most formatting (can't see how to get shading to go, though). You do this manually by selecting Send, and the Send Options are Adobe PDF, Dynamic HTML, Rich Text, Plain Text, and Excel.

However, if you try to set this up with Action Scripting, using Reports/Send a Layout via E-mail, the options are the same as above EXCEPT Excel.

Does anyone know why the Excel option is not available in Action Scripting, and do you know another way to do this short of Xbasic (which I assume will work)?

    Thanks.

No. However, doesn't PDF give you all you formatting, including shading? Still, you want excel for some reason. You can do this by turning your Action Script into Xbasic (go to the Code item on the menu while editing your button) and changing, say, "PDF" to either "Excel" or "xls". This suggests that not having Excel as an option in Action Scripting for sending a layout may just be an oversight and you may want to report this to Alpha Software, not as a bug but an oversight (or whatever). Of course there may be some reason not obvious to me right now for not having Excel be an option, e.g., too many versions of excel, raising too many complications--I just do not know. But it seems that if you can do it one place in Alpha Five you should be able to do it report.send().

Probably an oversight... or still on someone's long task list.

Re: Sending email with Excel report

The reason why they want Excel (I wanted PDF) is that the sales reps are used to working with Excel and can copy and paste a section of the spreadsheet into an email.

I agree it may be an oversight on Alpha's part and that looking at the Xbasic code is the way to go. Just thought I'd ask in case someone knew of some reason or limitation regarding this capability.

        Thanks.

Why not send the Excel sheet as an attachment?

It would be sent as an attachment to an email. The whole things would be created automatically, daily, on a schedule.

Report it as a possible oversight (use the bug report function even though arguably it is not a bug). If that is what it is, it probably would take very little to get it in the next patch. And even though it is a cinch to convert to Xbasic and make it an excel attachment, it should be available in the Action Scripting function for sending a layout. Or so it seems.
