Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AJAX Callback syntax question

    I have the following as a button in freeform to perform an AJAX Callback. I need to add a second parameter just like the first one ("oid"), but I cannot get the syntax right. Any one know?

    HTML Code:
    <button id="setvar1" onclick="a5_AJAX_Callback('post.ajax.a5w','oid='+urlencode($('post_ORDERNO').value)); return false;">Verify</button>
    Assume I want to add:
    'newvar='+urlencode($('post_NEWFIELD').value))

    Re: AJAX Callback syntax question

    Should be straight-forward Steve, to just use an ampersand. I'm modelling my attempt on the first example from the Web App Demo:

    Code:
    a5_AJAX_Callback('AJAX_UnderstandingTheBasics.Ajax.A5W','action=SayHello&name='+urlencode($('yourName').value));
    'oid='+urlencode($('post_ORDERNO').value))&'newvar='+urlencode($('post_NEWFIELD').value)) ;

    Send pages to me if you want.

      Re: AJAX Callback syntax question

      Steve,
      In my limited experience with one variable urlencode() works great,
      But I have had bad experiences using it multiple times within the same Ajax Call back.
      Unsure why but when I remove it everything works.
      Maybe URLencoding will work ok if preinserting it into the A5_Ajax_Callbacks
      but more than one urlencode statement has caused me issues.
      Yes, the "&" symbol seperates the variable, name/value pairs.

        Re: AJAX Callback syntax question

        This is the only syntax that ended up working. I'm passing oid and oid2.

        By the way, I find I cannot create an ajax call back using a Custom Field on a Dialog. I can do it on a Grid, but not a dialog. That is why the code below is in Freeform rather than a Custom Field (which is easier syntax).

        The place where the two variables join is where you see +'&amp;, which would be the same as "+'&".

        <button id="setvar1" onclick="a5_AJAX_Callback('courierpost.ajax.a5w','oid='+urlencode($('courierpost_ORDERNO').value)+'&amp;oid2='+urlencode($('courierpost_ORDERNOENTER').value)); return false;">Verify</button></td>

          Re: AJAX Callback syntax question

          Steve I wish to suggest to you a different approach of what you are doing.
          I think this is a more simplistic approach
          1.) Using a custom field on grid or custom control on a dialog,
          2.) Hand write out you HTML controls (or wizard them up and copy paste)
          3.) Find the event handler you need eg onselect() mouseover() ...whatever
          4.) Use your new event handler thats in your HTML control, inside your custom control to call a plain wrapped Javascript function
          5.) From the Javascript function use the $('fromtheId').value and $('theotherId').value then
          6. Either Pass these values to your a5_Ajax_Callback, or plonk them in it.
          -
          The advantages of this methodology,
          a) is its broken into simple steps that you can test on the way through
          b) between, a5 HTML, and jscript there seems to be a lot of undocumented problems encoding stuff both ways. (I have spent coutless hours working on most minute syntax)
          c) Reusability , and easy reproducability
          --
          I have seen &amp about, as used in place of &,
          I'll start using it from now also, although I'm unsure of its potency within jscript.

            Seems a lot more complex than what I did. This Callback request / callback page is quite neat. Simple calls to a normal A5W page that can have any xbasic desired. Its easy to test and debug.

              Well I'm trying to do everything possible , to stop myself going crosseyed with this ajax stuff.
              The other thing that is becoming painful
              is switching from a case Insensitive but type sensitive script lingo, to a case sensitive but type insensitive script lingo, every few minutes.
              But I guess that's what I'll have to get used to.

                Shouldnt $gvs('fieldname') do the trick to get the value of a single field?
