Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating Report from Table Sets

Hi Guys, I am accessing a remote database via AlphaDAO. The data is uploaded each day from a touch screen terminal. The user will then pull that data into Alpha 5 from which custom reports will be created.
The actual back end software supplied with the terminal does not give the client the required reports, so I have been asked to create a Alpha 5 runtime package which will allow them to do this.
I have attached a small sample program in case anybody can help me with creating a report based on their requirements.
The 4 tables contain the relevant data, but the problem lies with the way the payment method is stored in the table. I would have thought it would be held in the header table, not the items table ?
I think this can be done with the creation of a clever table set, so hopefully this then will allow me to create the report to display the data as required.

Probably not, but I've been wrong before. The screenshot you atttached doesn't seem compatible with the structures of the tables.

The report would need to have a group break on customerdetailitems->details to show Software and Computer but that field also holds Cash, Checque, and Credit Card.

If you had a set of header to details and copied the keytype 0 records to one table, the keytype 1 records to another, then crosstabbed the latter, then linked those two tables ....

Hope you get a better answer.

Thanks for looking at this Stan.
You are probably correct, it may not be possible to do this, as the payment methods are in the items table.

And they are not items so you would have to move them so you could do the reporting necessary.

As I indicated, it is possible but not straightforward.

What about something like the attachment.

Hi Stan, is it possible to filter the report. I now need to find a way to display all the sales for just one item on a seperate report. I have tried filtering, but it don't seem to work when using sub reports. Well, it sort of works, but does not display the payment method or the total value.

                    Thanks

The answer is Yes, but you will want to know before you start the report run what you item you want to filter on.

I have not looked at the set structure or where all the data is. One method is to build a table that you want to use for the report. This is a temp table and is only populated with data prior to print time.

The method of filling the table is by append and post operations. This can be a bit fiddly to start with, but once you have got the routine set up, it becomes very easy.

Ok Keith, I will look into this.
I have just been sent the actual tables now, typically these are slightly differant to the sample ones they sent to me on Friday.
First I will have to convert this to include the work that Stan did for me yesterday.
                        Thanks for the advice.

Re: Creating Report from Table Sets

Hi Keith, it seems I cannot append my temp table, as it is based on an alias table.
If you take a look at the table structure and the sets contained in the files I received back from Stan, you will see the problem I have.

Its the payment method which is causing the filter problem. I cannot seem to be able to access the information from this alias table, and therefore cannot create a temp table to be used for the filtered reports.

In the original clients paradox database, the payment method data is actually stored in the items table, and this is the real problem.

                          Regards
                          Fred

I dont understand what this means.

The report you have now, where has that data come from? What tables are you able to access?

Re: Creating Report from Table Sets

Hi Keith, I am linking to the back office database tables of a touch screen POS terminal.
This software does not give the client the desired reports, so I am trying to create them from within Alpha5. I use the AlphaDAO import facility to do this.
The problem is this... in the source database from the POS terminal, for some strange reason the PLU and the Payment Method are held in the ITEMS Table, instead of the Header Table and worse still, both are contained (IN THE SAME FIELD) ?.
Stan did a great job getting the data to display how the client requested it, by way of some clever table joins (sets), but as soon as the report is filtered on one particular item, the payment method field vanishes from the report. (The reason for this is because this is held in a sub table based on the joins in the table sets. The alias is a Lotus Approach term for joining a table to itself, sorry about the confusion..
Originally I wanted to use Passive linked table method to view the data, so as soon as the data changes on the POS terminal, it changes in Alpha automatically. Unfortuately I had to change the import method to DOA so I could define the fields as Numeric instead of those rotten Exponent Numeric fields. The DOA is more powerful, but I have to upload the tables each time into Alpha5, which is not as good.
The original souce tables are Paradox 5 which I have no control over other than importing the data etc, so unless I can find a way of creating FILTERED reports, with both the PLU item and Payment Method showing on the same line, I've had it.

                              Best regards
                              Fred
